Catastrophes Took 1800 Lives Last Year In America NEW YORK, Jan. 20 —(SpO— .Catastrophes — accidents killing five or more persons—took about 1,800 lives in the United States last year, a higher toll than in any year since 1947, Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. statisticians report. A major factor in the rise was the unusually heavy loss of life in tornadoes. Thirteen tornadoes killed more than 450 persons, and four of these storms, sweeping through well-populated areas, were responsible for most of the deaths. The first of these struck Waco, Texas, on May 11, taking 114 lives. The second and largest was a scr- ies of twisters which swept through Michigan and Ohio on June 8 and killed 142 persons, mostly in the Flint, Mich., area. On the following day a third storm cut through Worcester County, Mass., fatally injuring 88 people. A fourth storm roared through Vicksburg, Miss., on Dec. 5, leaving a death toll of 38. Eight other distasters in 1953 claimed more than 25 lives each. Cadillac is keeping its 'Fishtail' Fenders Usual Fight Due For New York Yankee First Base By UNITED PKESS ••There'll bo the usual mob at. first base for the Yankees this spring. That was guaranteed Wednesday when the world champions signed rookie Bill Skowron and announced that he would be a candidate for the first base job along with Joe Collins and Eddie Robinson, recently acquired from the Athletics. . The 23-year-old Skowron, former Purdue University star, batted .318 for Kansas City last year and, although he is still technically assigned to that club, he will go south with the Yankees; The Dodgers, meanwhile, announced the signing of southpaw Ken Lehman, holder of a 13-9 record with Montreal last season, and reserve first baseman Wayne Belardi, who batted .239 'in 69 games with Brooklyn: Outfielder Mel Clark of the Phillies, who batted .298 in 60 games in 1953, agreed to terms but Earl Torgeson, Gran Hamner and Jim Konstanty continued to balk at club terms. .Clark was the eighth Phillie player to sign his contract for '54. • The White Sox signed Rogers Hornsby, deposed Cincinnati manager, for service as a hitting instructor at their pre-season training camp which will open at Hollywood, Fla., March 1. Jan. 20 —UP—An AWOL soldier from Detroit was ordered to stand trial Feb. 1 on charges of rape and robbcrv in connection with the abduction of a Dallas couple last month. The soldier, Donald Joseph Sutcliffe, Tuesday was found sane on Dec. 11 eand 12, when -the alleged offenses occurred, as,well as now. The jury deliberated' only 10 minutes before bringing in its sanity verdict. Sutcliffe, 22, apparently paid little attention to the proceedings. H e held his head in hi s hand and looked at the floor much of the time. The couple was kidnaped the night of Dec. 11 as they got in their car after an evening of Christmas shopping. They said they were forced to drive their assailant, who took S8. to Arkansas. Twice enroute he forced the husband into the trunk of the car and attacked the woman. The husband and wife were tied 1o trees near Malvern, Ark., and their car abandoned nearby. Sutcliffe was arrested Dec. 12 when he tried to catch a ride with two peace officers who had been searching for the man all day.
