I 1 Early history of county The first human beings lived in Unicoi County thousands of years ago Signs of these old Indian camp grounds are still to be' found in Erwin at Sandy Bottom 00 Rock Creek Buffalo Creek Sciota Limestone Cove and other places The -first white settlers to invade what is now Unicoi County but was then a part of North Carolina were Jacob Brown and' a few families who arrived here in 1772 Mr Brown was a merchant and he brought with him a load of mercahndise on a pack horse He traded with the Indians for most of the 'land in what is now Unicoi and Washington Counties His home was on the Nollchucky River in the present Lamar community The first settlers to locate in our county were James Acton Richard Deakens Jonathan Webb Robert Hampton George Martin and a Mr Judd A little later came Baxter Davis Enoch Job Jesse Brown and Peleg and William Tilson Most of these settlers located in the Greasy Cove section which is now the area between Unicoi and the Nolichucky River William Lewis located on South Indian Creek near the present Temple Hill School where his wife and seven children were massacred by Indians One of his sons escaped and a daughter taken prisoner was later ran- somed for a gun Granny Lewis Creek is named after this family Many creeks valleys and mountains still carry the Study market to know when to buy and sell The individual who studies the market can come nearer doing as the old adage advises "To make money buy when prices are low and sell when prices are high" Some farmers always seem to products to sell when prices are high and have little that must be sold when prices are low This just happen It is the result' of market planning based on a knowledge of daily and seasonal price variations and price cycles Product prices often vary from day to day These variations are usually small unless the market gets a Jolt from outside influences such as crop estimates weather ete In such Instances the farmer must take his chances in selling on an average market day In some the demand may be higher on certain days of the week For example prices for fresh market strawberries are stronger on Wednesday and Thursday than on Monday and Tuesday Little can be done to change the sale date of such perishable Items except through careful harvest management Seasonal price changes happen to most farm products that are sold throughout the year Grain UNICOI COUNY FARM SECTION ERWIN TENNESSEE WEDNESDAY MARCH 21 1962 i 20 Paget JK Salute To Agriculture Jones Hardware Supply Co PH PI 3-4558 UNICOI TENN For All Your Farm throughout the year until harvest time again Increased storage costs insect rodent and weather damage and other similar factors as the year progresses are major factors in such rises Hog prices are usually highest from July-August and lowest form Some variation from this pattern occurs when the pork production cycle is changing and when competing meat product' supplies have changed from their usual pattern Beef prices reach seasonal highs during the months of July August and September Lowest ordinarily occur in February and March Price cycles occur over several years for many commodities Meat animal numbers are slow to Increase and decrease la response to price changes The length of the pork production cycle has been 4-5 years until recently when it appears to be shortening The cattle pco-aucion cycle normally Is 14-15 years but It too Is shortening It seems now that the top phase of the cycle has ended at about 4 years From this are would ect a 7-10 year cycle marketings will pay oIL Heaviest maketings should be planned when the seasonal prices are normally highest if casts do not get out of line The real goal of course is the highest net profit When prices are about their lowest the cattleman should build Ids herds When the top of the price cycle is reached the less productive animals should go to market (dong with heavy marketings of animals produced lor the meat market To take advantage of price changes you must study the market CUT HIGH QUALITY PASTURE FOR HAY Tennessee farmers are now sawing more grass-legume hay Unicoi County Form Agencies A Message From legume in the boot to early milk stage and red clover and Ladino clover from" early to one-halt bloom stage to shorten curing time helped produce higher quality hay In the spring moisture is usually plentiful and cool weather helps these glasses and legumes grow fast giving most farmers more pasture than they need for their livestock This excess spring growth should be harvested for hay or silage In selecting the pasture fields to be saved pick out the fields which have the highest quality plants For example: A farmer has a field of fescue-Ladino clover and another field of Hosiery and
