Despite its growing population and the rapid expansion of its cities, Texas still oilers plenty of wide open spaces. In fact, several West Texas counties—whore some ranchers ;ct n touch of claustrophobia if anyone camps within 10 miles of them—have shown marked im- improvemcnt in reducing that crowded Iceling during the last decade. Take Brcwstor County whose 6,208 square miles make it the largest in the state. When Uncle Sam took his tally in 1950 lie counted 7,303 residents. In I960 the census takers could lind only ,ei. The wide open spaces also <»ot wider in Hudspeth County which lias 4,533 square miles. During the decade its population dropped from 4,298 to 3,3-13. Several other Texas counties also reduced the possible nuisance of noisy neighbors, overcrowded schools and somebody else's chickens getting in their front yards. Jeft Davis County, with 2,258 square miles, now offers more living space since reducing its population from 2,029 to 1,582 In just 10 years. Kings County now has 640 residents—230 less than in 1950—to occupy its 944 square miles, and Loving County got a bit more breathing room by reducing its population by one—from 227 to 226 —for its 6*17 square miles. The census report shows plenty of other counties where a man needn't be bothered with neighbors playing their TV too loud late at night. Of Ihe state's 25-1 counties, 101 have less than 10,000 population. These 101 counties count only a total of 520,763 people which should assure prospective residents freedom from cxpresswiy traffic jams and the noise of J2t airliners taking off from any airports that might exist. Then there are 70 counties with populations between 10,000 and 20,000. They account for slightly over a million residents, or an average oi less than 15,000 person per county. These 171 counties occupy roughly two-thirds of Texas' land area of 263,513 square miles out account for only about 16 per cent of its 9,579,677 residents. The number of counties drops sharply for the more populate areas. There are 31 counties in the 20,000-30,000 population bracket, 16 with between 30,000 and 40,000 resident and 9 with from 40,000 to 50,000 population. The state Ins counties in the 50,000-100,000 group. Twelve counties have jammed from 100,000 to 500,000 persons within their boundaries and account lor slightly more than two million ot the state's total population. Conditions are more than neighborly in the state's remaining four counties—Harris, Dallas, Bexar and Tarrant—with populations up to 1,243,158 for Harris^/ These four counties hnve herded nearly 3.5 milion people—over 25 per cent of tile state's total—inro 4,747 square miles, or less than 2 per cent of Texas' land area. That figures out to an average nf 720 persons per square mile. It's no small wonder that a Hudspcth County cowboy mignt consider these four counties unfit for human habitation. "They are just coi people," he would probs for »ay.
