The condition of all range feed was .reported at 67 per. cent as'of Jan. 1; a decline of 5 per. cent from a.-, month .earlier!. Cattle range conditions were ~e- ported at 69 per cent, oft tnree points from Dec. 1, wKile sheep and goat ranges tumbled 7 per cent to 59 per cent,, the USDA said. Small.grain pastures,.which-had eased the critically short cured range feed supply, were; getting progressively shorter over much of the state. Growth-of small grain pastures was checked in early December by low temperatures over the s;ate plus lack of .moisture, particularly in the Plateau and Southern Plains area, '• • •„•: • •;,'•' - • F.ields were heavily stocked and available .feed was 'grazed off .quickly when new growth stopped, the USDA. added. Supplemental feeding of , hay* roughage, and concentrates has .been, -increased to offset the diminishing' supply of small grain'pas- tures, dry range grass and stalk fields. • ' . . Surplus hay and roughage were available in many East Texas counties, but were short in much of the: west except in irrigated areas. . Cattle were reported in. "fair to good" condition, with those feeding in the northwest on wheat pastures •making very good gains. Losses were reported very light from chilling winds during . December storms, but losses from.bloating on wheat pastures were listed as "fairly heavy."
