1 New NAACP leader plans economic action COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The ing body for the NAACP's 1,500 civil rights struggles of the 1960s branches and sets policy, hires the Gibson and 1970s opened the legal doors to blacks, but many still don't have the money to enter those doors and "enjoy America," says the new chairman of the national NAACP board. Greenville dentist William F. Gibson says he's not as patient as his predecessor in the job and places economic equality for blacks at the top of his agenda. "It's time we dealt with the economic issues so we can help (blacks) enjoy the benefits," he said in a telephone interview Thursday. "By doing that, the two major thrusts of the NAACP in the next 15 years will be in the economic arena." Gibson, the president of the South Carolina branch of the National As- ;sociation for the Advancement of Colored People, moved into the chairmanship of the 64-member board of directors upon the death Tuesday of Kelly M. Alexander Sr. of Charlotte, N.C. Gibson was elected vice chairman in January 1984. An election for a executive director and appraises the director's performance. The 52-year-old Gibson has been active in the NAACP for 24 years. He said his top priorities for the national group would be expanded efforts in the "Fair Share" program, in which the NAACP and other groups negotiate with companies to hire more blacks and move more blacks into management. It also is an effort to pressure those in the public sector into advancing blacks. Gibson said he plans to be more "aggressive" than Alexander, but said that was not intended as criticism. "Kelly (started in civil rights) in the clime of the '40s and '50s. I came into being (as an activist) in the '60s and 70s, and there was a little more impatience during that period," he said. Gibson said if blacks had tried the 1960s' tactics in those earlier years of the movement "they would never have gotten home from the meeting." Do you need another employee? Better grades linked with parent interest WASHINGTON (AP) Students whose parents closely monitor their activities tend to get the highest grades in school, and those with both parents in the home also score better, a new study shows. The National Center for Education Statistics drew those conclusions last week from a study of information gathered in 1980 and 1982 from 58,000 high school students. Sophomores were asked to what extent their parents or guardians monitored their activities — that is, knew where their children were and what they were doing. "The overwhelming majority of 'A' students (88 percent) also indicated the highest degree of parental supervision," the center said. "Fewer 'B' students indicated that their parents knew of their activities (81 percent)." Some 72 percent of the "C" students and only 61 percent .of the "D" students said their parents monitored what they did closely.
