Mrs. Bobby Beverly, school secretary at Viola Cobb Elementary School, sometimes puts mothering first. .She has been an elementary school secretary in the Channelview district for nine years. During that time she has applied band aids, wiped away tears, sewed on buttons, taken temperatures and located lost articles for Channelview youngsters as well as performing her secretarial duties at the school. Mrs. Beverly will resign from the district in June to begin work as a doctor's secretary. She will be succeeded by Mrs. Ralph Wills, who is now an aide- to Die school librarian. Both Mrs. Beverly and Mrs. Wills are long time residents of Channelview and both were active members of the Parent Teachers Association prior to becoming employed in the schools. Mrs. Beverly has three sons. Two, Kerry and Bobby, are grown, and Rex is in high school. Mrs. Wills is the mother of two. Her son Kicky and daughter Kathy are in high school. After more than a decade of planning, the nation's sixth largest city has an airport designed to grow with transportation needs. By JOE SCHULA Associated Press Writer HOUSTON (AP) — Shortly after midnight June 8 a passenger plane makes the first landing at the massive Houston Intercontinental Airport, nearing completion after 12 years of planning, building and controversy. Passengers will deplane at an enclosed flight station jutting out from a corner of one of two completed terminals and walk a maximum of 475 feet to the lobby. Elevators will descend to revolving baggage counters on the ground level. An underground driverless train will carry baggage and passengers to parking lots. This is the unit terminal concept, unique in airport construction. In each building, connected by the underground train, is a concentration of passenger services such as barber shops, car rental booths and restaurants. There is even an airport chapei. Aviation Directors. E. Manzo, 51, calls it the "Houston concept." Although Manzo has submitted i his resignation, effective the ! day the airport opens, he is en- i thusiastic about the new facility. "The Houston concept takes into consideration passenger convenience as well as aircraft efficiency," Manzo said. "This is going to be one of the most modern, functional, efficient and beautiful airports in the world," he said. "We have room for expansion to take care of an increased number of aircraft and passengers." Occupying a 7,300-acre site 16 miles north of Houston, the airport is between Interstate 45 and U.S. 59 freeways. About S110 million has been spent on the project and the total investment may reach $300 million by 1980. At least 10 major airlines are expected to accommodate 4.5 million passengers at Houston a year by Jan. 1. Hobby Airport will be operated as a private aviation facility after Houston Intercontinental opens. Houston ranked sixth in the nation in 1967 in general, or private, aviation and an estimated 3,200 private planes are expected at Hobby Airport by 1980.
