FWA Makes Loan For Planning New Dams in Texas WASHINGTON, March 2.—UP)— Planning for four proposed dams on the Brazos river and its tributaries in Texas will be carried on with a $60,000 loan to the Brazos river reclamation and conservation district, the federal works agency has announced. Each project has received a $15,000 planning lean. On the basis of plans and specifications, accurate cost estimates would be available for use in seeking to carry on actual construction. The loans are repayable without interest when construction starts. While the FWA announcement disclosed only that the $60,000 would be loaned to the Brazos district for planning dams in Bell, Coryell and Palo Pinto countries and that the structures would cost $22,710,000, Texas members of congress learned that at least three projects on which planning funds'will be spent ire on. the Leon and Lampasas rivers near Belton and inspiration point in Palo Pinto. county. • ' Several other dam sites are under consideration by Brazos district officials. Rep. Poage (D-Texas) announced. last Thursday that the Leon river project at Miller Springs had been, recommended by army division engineers for construction at a cost of, $11,200,000. The FWA allocation was decided apparently without knowledge that army engineers were issuing a definite recommendation, that the dam be built and that plants for the project has been divuvn, Poage said. Consequently, he added, arrangements may be worked out whereby $15,000 of the FWA allocation may De used for drawing plans for other dams proposed along the Brazos Watershed.
