Training Camp This Week Manufacturing Defects Eliminate Sphere Until Adjusted The Weatherman took complete charge of Appalachian League workouts the past week but club owners are hopeful that this week will bring a break in the rain and enable a full schedule of workouts so the teams will be in condition for the opening games set for next Tuesday May 4 Judging from what little work was accomplished last -week the newest member of the league Erwin will be the team to beat Spears has gone out and lined up a team of experienced players some Commodores Lick Beasley Collegians Pull Trick Yanks Failed Last Fall City vartrfttwm TeoarneQ yesterday irom a week at the St Louis training oamp at Lynchburg Va and was anything but enthusiastic about prospect of our Redbirds against such experienced players as Erwin and Kingsport are expected to turn loose In the Appalachian League on May 4th no use trying to conceal a situation that certainly can be termed critical" Doug said told Johnson City fans all along that I wanted to be frank with them Well to be perfectly frank the outlook is gloomy As things now stand it looks like we will get something like dozen players out of Lynchburg or fifteen at the most I saw these boys in action during the past week and there are some fine looking prospects have a young fast aggressive team with plenty of potential ability be In excellent condition and should make things Interesting for the other clubs But whether or not our youngsters can compete with the veterans that Kingsport and Erwin are signing is another matter hoping speed and hustle oan overcome experience I think we will have a better club than last he concluded After such a frank statement Johnson City fans say that we were promised a championship should the Redbirds fail to come through Bean making no promises except' that the 1943 Redbirds will be In there hustling and we believe if they will do this the fans Will string along with themr regardless of where they finish A majority of baseball fans go to a game for entertainment and they efin forget a lot of things so long as the team is hustling We will exchange speed and hustle for -wny type of player baseball and so long as they are doing their best they will attend the' games There Is a slim chance that the boys smarting the season here will all be around next August The Johnson City club has already lost about thirty boys to the armed forces and there will be others follow this summer All are bound to see their line-ups changed several times during the season but at this time we see little reason for doubting that the full 114 game sched-dule will be played There seems to be plenty of ball players and we believe there will be more as the season progresses Appalachian fans are hoping for a close pennant fight right down 6 the wire Already the management of the Erwin and Kingsport Clubs are claiming title contenders but they are perhaps whistling dn the dark We believe that the team getting o(f to a good start will make It tough throughout the season and this is where we believe the Cardinals will shine They will have had more work than the other clubs having started one week earlier The team that gets in front at the beginning should hold a big advantage this year because the chance that several men will be shifted during the season either to a Job with Uncle Sam or to a higher class club The Sv Louis Cardinals have already informed their farm clubs that they will be expected to take care of the parent team this season As the AA players move into the majors others in lower brackets are bound to move up also Regardless of what happens It's going to be an Interesting season NEW YORK April 24 IT) National League clubs were authorized today to use up their supply of 1942 baseballs replacing the dead 1943 sphere and the results immediately were apparent in the batting averages The old ball much livelier than the one which has been in use during the first few day of the new season wag employed both at Ebbeta Field where the Brooklyn Dodgers buried the Phillies under an 11-4 score Brooklyn and the Phillies Jointly piled up 23 hits including two double and a home run That was in sharp contrast with batting performances earlier in the season with admittedly dead 1943 ball in play Eight of the first 12 major league games played ended in shutouts most of them low-hit affairs Permission to use the 1942 ball until manufacturing defects in the 1943 sphere are corrected was given all national league clubs by president Ford Frick That the first shipment of 1943 balls was not up to major league standards was admitted yesterday by Lou Coleman vice president of A Spalding Brothers the manu-factureu-Beijsaid- that Jha trouble had been spotted and that a satisfactory ball would be available within two weeks Club owners fearful that the dead ball would stop their best hitters and cut down sharply on the crowd-appeal were sharply critical and eager for quick relief Whether action similar to had been taken by Will Harridge president of the American League -could not immediately be determined Harridge was not available for comment Having had flings in the big show The Erwin magnate has also been promised help from three southern Association clubs Nashville Chattanooga and Birmingham In fact players are already on hand from Nashville and Chattanooga Erwin Gets Help From Southern Larry Gilbert has already sent over a pitcher and Joe Engel of the Lookouts chipped in with two infielder and a pitcher Birmingham is expected to come through with a catcher and outfielder and perhaps an infielder or pitcher Spears is counting heavily on Walter Hunley outfielder who hit 335 in the Bi-State league last season and Charley Cameron pitcher from the Wisconsin State circuit last year Also included in the list is Charlie Pescod star flinger from the South Atlantic league Lefty Scott formerly with Birmingham and Walter Honeycutt Infielder from Memphis A number of upstate youngsters are to bid for berths with the Erwin club Joseph Higgins of Kingsport has Jhe largest number of candj dates working out Twenty-eight boys reported the first day and this number has been greatly increased Neal Millard Kingsport manager is expected to reduce the squad to around twenty players sometime this week and then get down to serious business So far only two pitchers Archer and Akard both experienced flingers have been the only players to get any consideration tor regular berths Bristol Short On Experienced Players Up at Bristol things are not so bright Only thirteen players reported opening day to Manager Hal Gruber but New York Scouts Frank Rickey and Marty Purteell have already been on the job and are now combing 'southern states for talent The twin manager has The 1943 Cardinal baseball machine started taking shape yesterday -when six players were added to fee active list Business Manager Doug Bean upon his return from fee Lynchburg Va training camp announced fee addition of the following players: Infielders Billy Williams and Joe Mascolo pair of half-pint whiz kids due to make a great hit with Johnson City fans Outfielder Charles Lockman who showed plenty of signs of hitting the ball hard and often outfielder Tony Sabota promising youngster who also can give fee ball a long ride a Pitchers Willis Morgan who had experience in several leagues last season and Henry Moore an elongated six-foot-six hurler who showed fine form in intra-oamp games last week With Pitchers Larry Guelfo and Vern Rider already on the list this brings the number of players actually counted on to eight An experienced first baseman from Florida has agreed to terms his signed contract been received yet Considerable more nelp will be forthcoming this week from fee Lynchburg camp The above-named players appeared to be fee cream of the crop at the training ramp and should form the nucleus of a speedy club Columbus and Rochester of tha famed Cardinal organization will send several out- standing players to Lynchburg this week and Johnson City will receive its share of this quota Right now fee catching department is bare but it is possible an experienced receiver may be obtained who will manage the club Negotiations are underway It is also possible a heavy-hit- ting outfielder may skipper tha local entry this summer The man- agerial Beazley 5-4 in 12 slap-happy innings The young St Louis Cardinal star of last year now a second lieutenant in the Army brought his Berry Field team to McGugin field today for a tune-up game preparatory to the opening of the city league Beazley is field athletic officer at the nearby base Lobbing them over but at times cutting loose with a blazing fast boll or a hook Beazley fanned 18 Commodores 17 in the first nine innings but a defense that leaked from stem to stern proved Johnny's downfall The Cbmmodores undefeated In Southeastern conference play touched Pitcher Johnny for 12 hits but many of the blows fell safely because of poor fielding A triple followed by a single gave Vandy its winning run It was first workout since turning his pair' of wins in last world series
