(EDITORS'S NOTE: The books reviewed below are available at the Val Verde County Library, Washington at Springj) HOW TO TALK WITH PRACTICALLY ANYBODY ABOUT PRACTICALLY ANYTHING: In this guide book to the art of interviewing and good conversation, the female star of NBC's Today program, Barbara Walters, draws on her own wide experience in talking to celebrities, tycoons and just plain people. She explains the conversational devices she has used successfully and documents her advice with anecdotes from actual interviews. A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, Miss Walters is seen daily on the "Today" show. She is known not only for her special ability to draw people out but also for landing interviews with usually unapproachable people. Her list includes President and Mrs. Richard M. Nixon, President and Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson, HRH Price Philip, Princess Grace of Monaco, Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower, former secretary of state Dean Rusk, Mrs. Rose Kennedy, Andrew Wyeth, the late Senator Robert Kennedy, and Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as such show business legends as Judy Garland, Ingrid Bergman, Fred Astaire and Rex Harrison. In 11 ancedbte-filled chapters, each covering specific types of people, Miss Walters explains the simple conversational devices for which she herself overcame the terror of meeting new and intimidating people and learned to get beyond small talk to meaningful communication. Her advice is both practical and entertaining and will enable anyone to talk easily with anybody about almost anything . . . and enjoy himself while doing it. In this howrto book that ranges beyond television, Miss Walters shares her technique. Like aii successful techniques, hers is essentially simple: a seemingly inexhaustible supply of ready questions, a genuine interest in people, innate tactfulness, and a generous ability to put herself in the other person's place. — NAOMI BREWER RITA 746 S.
