Morton Smith of Gainesviile has spent 25 years giving iJublicity to the other fellow. It's about time he got some, too. Smith is celebrating- his 25th anniversary of continuous connection with the Gainesville Register. He started as a skinny cut) reporter, today is the editor. He was a thin youngster just a year out of high school when he showed up at the Daily Register office and was given a notebook and pencil by Business Manager Clar-« ence H. Leonard. He said at the time, when ha asked for the job, that he had been interested in newspaper work all hia life. He and a neighborhood playmate published newspapers on rubber type presses since they were old enough to spell. He was excited that day 25 years ago when he went out in quest o£ news. He had no assignment—he was just told to go out and gather news. He was on his own—and those first few days were dark Nothing happened to write about. Then an evangelist came to town, A city-wide revival was held. Smith wrote the story and got his first byline. But he wasn't sure whether he should be proud of thftt byline or not. "I couldn't figure if it was an honor, or whether my name ye& sUpped on the story beeavise thj» Mitbr wanted the public TO know ne hadn't written it himself," Smith says. But he stayed on, and worfcefl hard. He is now editor, and writes ft daily column called "To^ra Topfe?.'' He says he works for toe ''best em» ployers any individual eve? haft" hopes to serve another 95 year?. - He probably wul. and handspuie 'f His protest the Gainesville ty w Waft. *^-BW ' i i ',' I "\ »<*-»' v<^sa*.,*, Jr ti
