Page 10 THE BRAZOSPORT PACTS Brazosport and Brazoria County, Texas, Sun., December 11,1960 Letter from Don. * * (Continued From Pngo'l) residents is a night clubbing trip across the Rfo Grande. (Actually Corpus citizens feel there are only two worthwhile excursions when they have out of state visitors. These being trips to the San Antonio zoo and the Mexican border. . For that matter many Brazosporters drive down to the border.) But the Valley bunch, being on the scene, know the right hours to avoid queing at the bridge and know about what to expect and where to go along Mexico's great white way. Some take almost no other form of recreation — but this one heavily. First striking thing about Reynosa at night was the brilliant show of lights and the celebration type street crowd. Except that the signs were brighter with neon and lower on the skyline it was much like New York's tour- ist track at 42 nd and Broadway. Basic attractions are similar to those in Times Square except in Mexico they're less expensive. Probably this is because American tourists have essentially the same tastes wherever they go. Anyhow, Rcynosa and Broadway offer many places to eat and drink — in both places furnishings are similar, modern style and chosen for the expensive look. Food at both corners of the continent is mildly exotic and quite good. Both have floorshows) some Broadway spots have bigger casts but some Reynosa acts are livelier than N. Y. law allows. In addition to the food, drink and entertainment there are the ubiquitous souvenir sellers. Times Square has clothes, Italian switchblade knives, table linens, art objects. Reynosa offers pottery, glassware, art objects, wood carvings and endlessly on. I wound up with a small fat onyx fish. White and tan he is, W V, „ .. • . .-I '•.,' ,],:- ' .,!„•; j,«--> a green glass eye. As is said • ..i.i.iuc i uuii i know art but J know what I like". A street peddler there called at a tourists with arms loaded. "Hey, you bought all that junk, why not buy some of mine, too." That about tells it. But still I remember that fantastic lizarr; made out of a gnarled and twisted tree. He was.a good seven feet over all with a writhing tail and many-clawed feet. Just what I need to crouch on my bowsprit for a figurehead. But the salt spray would wither him away; and anyhow he cost too much. In a trip through the central market we saw some food stalls with garlic tied in long chains like in Europe but more often were tourista type nonsense articles. It was conspicious that of three of us neither the other man nor 1 attracted the clerks. As we strolled past the stalls; ."Lady, please come in here" was the chant. Probably this indicates the merchants have readied rather, cminy conclusions-about who does the buying'for the Anglos. No one could tell me it it was heavy humor oir 'Latin acceptance "que se va.se va'.' but the restaurant whete we dined — one of the .largest arid 1 >nicest — was called "La cucaraclta." They ,provide, wonderful food with the native dishes .sort of a Tex-Mex compromise. Quantities were overwhelming at about $2 a head. Besides the lower prices service at the bars was better than in Manhattan. Both Reynosa and New York prefete waiters. This is in .the European tradition that women aren't capable cooks or seryeVs. jty European standards food like mother used to cook .would be very plain indeed. Good food is cooked by chefs and served by waiters, they.say. In New York waitresses were considered capable of working in tea shoppe type places and hash houses. B"i not ot serving fine food and drinks properly.. That sort of prejudice is breaking down in this country but not in Mexico. However, New Yorkers make it painfully clear they want a getteroUs tip; while the Mexican bar waiters expect none. This made Reynosa pleasanter, as well as less costly. At one bar sereral young Anglos came in; loud and belligerently drunk.. I saw no bouncers about and wondered if these guys were going to start a rumble. Their table was next to ours and I am one of those sensitive souls who can hardly stand being hit over the head with bottles and chairs. My friends, however, said don't worry, they'll soon drift along to boystown where facilities are adequate. The entire large uptown bar section has but one middle aged policeman. And there seems to be no need for more. Valley jokers say that boys- town "is all right if you like boys". Thn)'s n Vrifin misln.-.rting. But thr enclosed area across the small guarded bridge is one more of the tourist attractions. At the gate it is possible to buy "carta de mesora" issued by the national government for $5, American money. Translated literally this is a permit or card for waitresses. Men need none. Women heed one when they want out over the bridge again. This is another example of Latino practicality. Women may enter the compound without money and men may leave without. Inside the gate is simply a smaller night club area. Food, drinks, and entertainment are available as in the uptown gay white way. Additionally there are housing facilities — rather like small colonies of tourist courts. There are some keepers-of-order about: official police and hired . bouncers at the clubs. | Entertainment is more agres- sive and the visitors may get In oh the act. SlghtsrHng trips hw then were the source of those Mexican government waitress permits. There is one more trip In Reynosa kind of like the slumming in Manhattan's Bowery. This i a through the native quarter. Lights are very poor — no street lights, few house lights ,and dim ones in the little bars. These bars are far less luxurious; dirt floors, few tables and little English spoken. But the people seem really to be happier and more genuinely cordial than in the neon palaces. It does take a bit of Spanish to get around and even than not knowing your way brings difficulties. W h i 1 e w e were drift i n g through the dim back areas the ground gave way. One girl half fell in; but luckily she was tall and a good sport. It was an abandoned cesspool. Esa es la vita. - DON WILSON.
