•AGI 2 Editorial—Adv.—BE 3-3511—Classified—BE 3-2611 MCTS BRAtOSPORT AND BRA2ORIA COUNTY, TEXAS. WSD., AUGUST 15. 19*2 Agenf irs BUSY 7IM* FOR RICE BUGS By Ji. M. VmiKhnn Grasshoppers. rice slink hues. fmsarcano borers and rice slalk borers all are busy in rice fields at this time. Farmers having fields that are resinning to head should maintain a close, watch, especially for grasshoppers and stink hugs. No control Is recommended (or sugarcane borers or rice slalk borers. These worms damage the rice hy tunneling inside the stalks. The h e a d of the injured slalk turns white and fails to mature. Sometimes in late planted rice young plants may be damaged severely just above the water line causing the rice to fall. Blost fields will show some of these white heads, but in most cases the damage is minor and would not justify spending extra money even if a satisfactory control measure was known. The stink bug feeds on developing rice grains in the milk and dough stages. Grains punctured In the milk stage are emptied and a loss in yield results. Grains fed on in the dough stags usually result in broken grains which lower milling quality or is pecky rice which lowers the grade. Grasshoppers feed on rice while it is blooming and occasionally will injure the stem just below the head causing the head to blast. Fields can be checked accurately only by using an insect net. By walking through the field and' sweeping the heads back and forth with this net, the operator can get an accurate count o! stink bugs and grasshoppers present in the field. H as many as fifteen gttnk bugs are caught in ten sweeps, tha farmer will be justified in poisoning the field. Two different kinds of grass hoppers may be found with the most common being the small light green type known commonly as the Katydid. This type ot grasshopper does very little damage and should be disregarded unless the count builds up to as high | M twenty-five to thirty in ten! sweeps. The other type grasshopper,' however, is brownish yellow when ; small and may grow to be as long ! gj two Inches in length and is known as the Differential grasshopper. This type does far more damage than the Katydid and| ihould b« controlled when as many a» five to ten are caught In ten sweeps, All insecticides recommended for stink bugs will control grasshoppers.
