The former Baylor Bear coach, who also coached at the University of Houston and Mlneola High School, took over the head coaching Job at Brazosport when Kenneth Wilson stepped down after last season. Joining Cooper on the varsity staff will be Murl Furney, L. Z. Bryan, June Davis and Boyd Tingle. Flash Walker has been placed In charge of the Junior Varsity, while James Cox and Johnny Redden will work with Brazosport's Storm Squad or sophomores. , Furney and Cooper are the only two names on the Brazosport coaching staff from that of last season. The other varsity member Is Billy "Plckard, full-time trainer. Both the varsity Exporters and the Junior Varsity Will -Joe working together, while the Stojrfti Squad, whfch will be mide up bn only sqph»,will be a complete unit. Both the 1 JV'« ind'SS have an eight game schedule. ' . Around 60 prospects reported for opening drills ori Friday and another 50 sophomorei are due on Tuesday, Sept. 1st, as school gets underway. A shade, of the Baylor green and gold apparently rubbed ft on Cooper as he ha* installed a brand new type of offensive for the Exporters Of 'S8, In addition to the split-T, the Shipi will use a flanker and floater halfback, plus a t faft I Question Mark Grid Season split-end. However, at all times the line will be balanced. Some of the time the Exporters will have a split-end to the right and » flanker to the left. This, of course, will be switched back and fourth throughout a game. Cooper and his staff feel, that It the defensive secondary develops fairly fast that the Shippers will sport a fairly strong defense. The offensive Is something else. With the new formations and plays installed into the Shipper camp the ball-moving unit might not catch up to the defensive until mid-season. The inexperience at quarterback and in the defensive secondary will count against the Exporters this season. In a nutshell, the entire season depends on just ho* fast the Exporter offensive can Improve. • . For 1659, Cooper hopes to field both an offensive and defensive unit with different players on each group with the exception of a few spots. With Pat Patterson and Robert Sterling at fullback, plus halfbacks like Cooper Ford, Bob Tate, Lynn Longino, Noel McAnulty, Donald Strong, Ford Brown and Walter Minter the Ships should have a fair amount o r speed, depth and power. In the past it has been speed and depth that put the Exporters behind from the very start. This year 1 the locals have a lot more depth and their speed is above average, but still not up to pat with other loop entries. Bob Walker, Charles.Griffin and .VIcCary are the quarterbacks la CoopM'l split-T plans and right now Walker has th* Inside pole for the starting Job. Football savvy, ball handling aad pitting ability go together to make Walker, wh» If a Junior, a likely starter. Such defensive hands as Patterson, Sttt- ling, Ford, Terry Forbes, Kenneth Baar, Jot Cousins, Bubba Wittenberg, Allan Shorkejr, Jack Pybus, McAnulty and others make tht Shippers double tough. • As usual Pasadena, Galena Park and Bay* own look like the strong entries In 12-AAAA. '.'ootball but this could be the year that • few surprises dot the program. Cooper's Exporters could very well be a major surprise. »»»« J&^frfl 1 W , . , . •«. rwwt jwsa/ts' i'!)-.', -. s&r'iptf'i ** •* ,„ f Loolriof iorwatd to th.
