I v \ ^ 1 St. James 7 Episcopal Church 206 West Greenwood Street Church Phone PR 5-4348 Rectory Phone PR 5-268 St. James' Episcopal Church, one of the many fine edifices in the city, is deeply rooted in the history of the community. " Its origin goes back almost 100 years to .the time in 1870 when an arrrry chaplain held a service in San Felipe del Rio, the early name of the community that led to the establishment of St. James'.. : Rev. Engletbn Barr; U.S. Army chaplain, ministered to soldiers stationed at old Fort Clark in Bracketh'ille. He organized St.-Andrew's Mission there. Then on one of his rides \vith the cavalry unit he visited San Felipe del Rio, 35 miles west of his post, and realized the need for religious services. He sought and-secured permission to hold such services in a store that also housed the early-day post office and it was here the first Protes'taht rites were held. Religious interest flourished and in 1881 the Episcopalians built a church for themselves., a small wooden structure on East Garfield Avenue at the site now occupied by Central Fire Station. The little building was nearing completion, with dedication planned for May 1, when a cyclone destroyed it on April 30, It was rebuilt and served its parish for more than 30 years. Land was purchased along the large irrigation_ canal at West Greenwood Avenue, the old property was sold arid a brick church of modest dimensions was constructed at the new location. ..'.'.. ' In due time, the congregation -outgrew its accommodations and a new church was planned. It was completed in 1949. " • Henry Steinbaumer of. San Antonio was the architect- for the church and lie "chose Spanish-Gothic lines for the structure' in keeping with .the atmosphere of the area it serves. . Neopolitan glass windows add'to the beauty of the structure. The large front windows with their jewel" tones were made in London.- " Again as the congregation and its needs grew, a new wing was added to the structure. A multipurpose wing, it was named Prosser Hall for the late R. W. Prosser, benefactor of the church whose generosity during his life time and his bequests following his death provided financial aid. .Presently the church is'served by Rev. O. W. Nickle, who has been rector of St. James' since 1949. He aiso serves St. Andrew's Church in Brackettville. the mission that pre-dates St. James'. - SCHEDULE OF SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES: Lay readers -will bo h> charge of tin,' services today, June 4, in tlic absence of thr 7rector from the city, Morning Prayer sit-11 "o'clock will be in .charge'<>[ the hiy readers.
