c. 21, |J|J Gtob*-G«M*ta, NU 27 Mn City, U. Preston is accustomed to old part By HAL BOYLE NEW YORK an - Benjamin Franklin thought he might have become the first U.S. president had his son not been a Tory during the American Revolution. This is one of the facts about the Founding Father that Robert Preston learnedTvlale studying for his role in the Broadway musical. His portrayal requires a wig, and Bob has to shave his head each night before going x on stage. Playing the role of a 70-year- old diplomat is no problem to the sprightly actor. He is used to roles older than his actual age. "Even as a kid I never played anyone young," he said. "At 18, in my first film, I played Barbara Stanwyck's husband. I only played one juvenile part in my life, and found it so dull ] never tried another." Preston was born in Newton Highlands, Mass., but moved to California in childhood. After graduating from high school, he joined a repertory company headed by Tyrone Power's mother, and took part in 42 productions before being signed by Paramount Pictures. He grew a mustache to make him look more mature, and during the next dozen years or so became one of the most versa tile .villains in screen history. Preston proved his gift for comedy in Broadway revivals before his biggest hit as the rascally band instrument salesman in "The Music Man." A man of gusty vitality, he enjoys his work hugely and has no ambition to become either a writer or a director. "Everything I do is its own reward," he observed. "Anybody who works at anything he doesn't like has my sympathy. I feel sorry for actors who think their job is a chore." "But I don't have many dislikes. I don't even dislike going to the dentist, because I accept it as necessary in the scheme of things," he said. "I think a man's goal should be to work so as to please the best people in his own craft, and if he does that he is fairly well sure of pleasing the perceptive ones outside his craft." Bulgaria has interest in U.S. farm products WASHINGTON (AP) — The Foreign Agricultural Service reported Saturday that Bulgaria has shown interest in buying farm products from the United States. There has been very little trade between the two countries since 1950. Bulgarian interest was in hides and skins, cotton, cereals, feed and seed. The service indicated, however, that any appreciable increase in such exports would involve extension of long-time credit to Bulgaria. Holly decks the rafters BEATTYVILLE, Ky. W) — Holly, with its bright red berries, is widely used as a Christmas decoration. To some of the pioneers in Kentucky it had a more practical use. They believed the surest way of keeping maggots away from cured meat was to swing hams and sides of bacon from holly pegs fitted into smokehouse walls and rafters.
