For the amateur, propagation is the t -sicst, taken from soft wood cuttings in the fall (October), on through until spring, in either! a cool glass house, cold frame' or a lath bench with a southern exposure, protected with a frame covered with a clear plastic material. The procedure for taking fuchsia cuttings is the same, no matter when it is done. Fall cuttings will make a blooming size plant that year. However, you will need to wait another season for the plant 1 to reach specimen proportions. Commercial growers usually start cuttings during every month of the year. Most growers use sharp rivcrj sand for their rooting medium. Sand is cheap, easy to obtain, grows excellent plants and has proved itself over a period of years. Other materials on the market are sponge-rok and vermiculite. Mix either or both with- half j sand, with each other, or usedj separately, will raise excellent: plants. This writer uses vermiculite or sponge-rok simply because they may be purchased in any nursery or garden supply store, tucked under the arm and carried home.
