Unpleasant movie still academy stuff By BOB THOMAS AP Movie-Televition Writer HOLLYWOOD (AP) — Movies about kidnaping are uncomfortable to watch, which may he why -none has been very successful. "Seance on a Wet Afternoon," a bizarre kidnap tale, is not likely to win a wide audience because of this apparent distaste to view children in jeopardy. But it can be recommended for those seeking a completely engrossing, if unnerving, two hours of film. The British-made film begins with an expedition into the nc- cult and ends with one. In between is a period of unrelieved starkness as two dispossessed individuals plot and carry out their diabolical scheme. Their motive la clear to them, if not entirely to the audience. The idea seems to be that a passe but still practicing med- iiurn and her compliant husband jfigure to abduct a rich man's daughter, then help solve the I crime as public proof of her extrasensory powers. Kim Stanley makes one of hrr too-infrequent film appearances as the unhappy medium, and she plays it for every shade of [dementia. The final trance, in ; which she contorts herself jthrough childhood scenes, is trip kind that makes Academy con- Isideration imperative. Richard Attenborough, who doubles as producer, plays the hvisband with such deftness and sympathy that you almost find yourself pulling for him to accomplish the job. "The Americani/.alion of Emily" is another disturbing film, on an intellectual rather than emotional level. It takes all the standard cliches of Hollywood war movies and maims them with cynical disdain. LI. Cmdr. Charlie Madison is a dog-robber, an admiral's aide vho can commandeer the best steaks, booze, broads and other necessities for the smooth func- ioning of the high command in London before D-Day. He is also a devout coward. When callrd .ipon to become the first Navy man to die on Omaha Beach as public relations gimmick, he naturally rebels. Charlie hai an English girl friend named Emily, who is appalled and yet fascinated by his total lack of morals. Despite hrr ingrained sense of duty and honor, she falls madly in love with him. James Garner as Charlie dors his best screen work so far, playing a wider range than ho has exhibited before. Julie Andrews is down-to-earth as Emily. This ono is not for kiddies. Masons at Charles City name officers CHARLES CITY — 0. Arthur Luther has been elected mastrr of St. Charles Lodge No. Ml, AF 4 AM, at a meeting held in the Masonic Temple. Other new officers elected for 1965 are Robert Meyer, senior warden, and .ferry Cole, junior warden. Roscoe Markle was reelected treasurer and J. Wpstpy re-elected secretary. The new officers will he installed Jan. 21. This will he prc- ceried hy a dinner for Masons and their guests. BUTTER-NUT CERTIFICATES Dec. 15 is the deadline for Butter-Nut certificates and labels.
