The United Mine Workers Journal condemned the Democratic platform today, comparing it unfavorably with the labor pledges of the Republican party. The Journal, which reflects UMW President John L.

Lewis' opposition to the New Deal, said editorially that the Democratic party was running on its record and that the labor keynote of the platform was "stand pat." On the other hand, it said, Republicans expressed a willingness to "unfreeze wages," to "unshackle labor from being frozen to the job," to restore the Labor Department to union labor, to reorganize and consolidate Government labor agencies "and administer the laws on a basis of equality." "Such is the comparable score labor won at the Republican convention and lost at the Democratic convention," the Journal said. It also charged that the status -of pending bituminous coal price legislation demonstrated that the Democratic party's endorsement of such legislation was "designed for votes and not performance." The Journal also carried an article by its editor, K. C. Adams, who asserted that all of the action of the Democratic convention had been arranged in Washington a week in advance. It had been agreed, Adams said, that Vice-President Henry A.

Wallace was to be dropped, that Sen. Harry S. Tru- man would be acceptable for the Vice-Presidential nomination and that other possible candidates were riot acceptable. He scoffed at the role of the CIO Political Action Committee and said all its effort and money had been staked on the renomination of Wallace. That effort, Adams said, was doomed from the start.

He said CIO President Philip Murray and PAC Chairman Sidney Hillman were given "a wee bit of satisfaction" in vetoing War Mobilization Director James F. Byrnes for the Vice-Presidential nomina tion. He insisted, however, that party leaders had ruled out Byrnes before the convention and that the purported veto was allowed "for the purpose of saving their (Mur ray's and Hillman's) faces." John Harris Teacher Gets Navy Commission Elvin K. Troutman, 2434 Elm street, Penbrook, for the past three years a teacher of general shop work at the John Harris High School, has received a commission of lieutenant, junior grade, in the Navy, and has been ordered to report to Princeton University for indoctrination on August 25. In addition to his classwork at John Harris, Troutman was manager of athletic equipment for the past two years, traveling with the teams" when games were played away from home.

Prior to accepting his position here, he was an instructor of shoD subjects and director of the band in the Camp Hill High School and had taught in the Clifton Heights schools. He is a graduate of Hegins High School, Millersville State Teachers' College and has done extension work of the University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania State College. 'y Mrs. Troutman, who was the former Miss Mildred Savidge, He-gins, together with their 3-year-old son, Douglas, plans to leave in a few weeks to make her home temporarily with her father, J. E.

Savidge, at Hegins. Army fleeds Officers Sixty physical reconditioning of ficers will be commissioned in the Army to handle the increasing number of casualties returning from battlefronts, the Third Serv ice Command announced today. Applicants for these commis sions, ranging from second lieuten ant to major, must be 38 to 60 years of age, with a master's or doctor's degree in physical education, medicine, physiology, public health or hygiene, and have had at least 10 years supervisory and ad ministrative experience in college, large high schools or large public schools systems. They will be given a four-week training course at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. Mail Bag (THE EVENING NEWS will be find to print letters from Hi reader! on themes of public interest.

SIZE OF CREWS REDUCED Editor, THE EVENING NEWS: Sir: We were told in a published state ment purporting to have been made by the Pennsylvania Railroad that "because of the continued shortaKe of men it is not anticipated that the installation of west bound retarders (now under way in the Enola yard;) will result in any layoff of employes." That statement was published last Tues day.

Yet it comes to my knowledge that three westbound hump crews of the Enola Yard were reduced by ten men each under an order issued by the com pany yesterday, inis hardly seems consistent. J. H.
