Losses elsewhere went to around two points while gains of a similar amount were seen infrequently. Volume was near Monday's 2,100,000 shares. • Steels, which have been buoyant along with the aircrafts, also were under some selling pressure, and lower with them were the rails, motors, coppers, chemicals, rubbers, distillers, and radio - televisions. Among lower stocks were Bethlehem Steel, General Motors, Goodrich, Douglas Aircraft, Zenith Radio, Allied Chemical, Southern Railway, and Amerada Petroleum. U. S. government bonds were steady. Soldiers Say /op Pot i £e WerefooHough iff TOKYO *»-Two American soldiers who saw tl» arrest of Mrs. JeanettP Sponi* Friday evening said today Japanese police handled her "wfth unnecessary roughness." The two men, located after a day of broadcast appeals for witnesses made forma) statements to the U. S. Army provost marshal here and later talked to newsmen. Text of the Army statements have not been released. Neither man said he was in a position to see whether Mrs. Spo- nik, a pretty young Army civilian employe from St. Louis, was beaten as she claims. But both said what they saw of police treatment was "too rough." The police officer Involved and Tokyo police headquarters Heny that any beating took place and said Mrs. gponik was restrained only when she became violent aft er a downtown brawl with a taxi driver. One of the soldiers, Cpl. Victor Cooper of Buffalo, N. Y., said he tried to come to Mrs. Sponik's rescue as police were trying to handcuff her. "When I saw what was going on 1 yelled to the cop 'You don't have to kill her! 1 and I tried to get through the crowd, which tried to hold me back," Cooper said. The other witness, Sgt. Joseph Nagle, Westfield, Mass., was the soldier who drove Mrs. Sponik's car to the police station while she and the policeman rode in the rear. Mrs. Sponik and the taxi-driver told contradictory stories of slaps and blows after a minor traffic incident in downtown Tokyo. Mrs. Sponik was on her way home from work when, she said, the cab sideswiped her car. The cabbie denied touching her car. The two soldiers said they were driving downtown when they saw a crowd and stopped to investigate. "From what I could see, she was scared and I couldn't see any reason for the handcuffs," Cooper said. "I think she was scared of the police and scared of the crowd. "She seemed to be pushing him off, but he dragged her out and got the cuffs on her," he said. "Then, he got her by the arm and shoulder and pushed her back in. It was too rough. He didn't strike her with his fist— it was all with the open hand on the side of her face and her hip.' She fell against the floor, hitting her knee." Nagle said he agreed with Cooper's account from what he had seen, • *. Man Charged With Leaving Accident Scenes DETROIT IP—Police today held a 35-year-old Detroit carpenter on charges of leaving the scene of four accidents in which his car rammed three autos, leaped a curb and struck a pedestrian and was finally halted after a chase. Within a 10-minute span Monday, police said, Robert J. McAuley's car plowed into three others. Two hours later, they said, his car jumped a curb and knocked down a pedestrian. The pedestrian received first aid at a nearby hospital and was released. He was the only one hurt. A motorist, who saw the last accident, gave chase. He yelled to a police squad car and McAuley was halted. < , Drivers of the three cars gave police McAuley's license number. He denied the accidents, but admitted he had been drinking, police said.
