Discusses Book Of Thomas Mann Thomas Mann's "Joseph Cycle," the of books begun in 1926 as allegory of the life of the author, was discussed by Mrs. F. Douglas Beidel, of Millersburg, at the meeting of the Education Department of the Civic Club of Harrisburg yesterday afternoon. The Twentieth Century, according to Mrs. Beidel, has produced no literature SO certain of sur-; vival as the "Joseph Cycle." "Into the Cycle, the author has written his own struggle in the world of today," said Mrs.

Beidel. The entire plot of the third book, "Joseph in Egypt," which was published last year in two volumes, may be found in the thirty-ninth chapter of the Book of Genesis, the speaker said. She reviewed the first book, "Joseph and His Brothers," and claimed that the greater part of the story is retained in the mind of every person familiar with Bible history. Tracing ancestry of Jacob, son of Abraham, the volume describes the life of Jacob, and Rachel with their son Joseph, and the book ends with the birth of Benjamin and the death of Rachel. "As Jacob is left weeping for his wife at the end of the first volume, so he weeps at the loss of his son, Joseph, at the close of the second volume.

For 'Young Joseph' tells of Jacob's great love for his beautiful son, of the jealousy of the older sons, children of Leah, for this child of Rachel, and of the brothers' attack on and attempted murder of Joseph," Mrs. Beidel said. Mann began his series in 1926, and after long study and numerous journeys to and through Palestine and Egypt published the first book of the cycle in 1933, during the first year of the Hitler regime. Long a noted literary figure, Mann has been awarded the Nobel Prize in 1929 for his "The Magic Mountain," which was written in the years following the World War, Throughout his life a cal, Mann was revolted at the persecution staged in Germany under the Third Reich, and left the country. His exile at first was voluntary, but in 1936 he published in Switzerland reply to the Nazi attack on non- writers and artists, with the result that citizenship was revoked, and his scholastic degrees recalled.

During the short business session which preceded the program, Mrs. William B. Bennett, department chairman, Tea followed Mrs. Beidel's lecture. Red carnations and red candles decked the tea table at which presided Mrs.

E. Fred Rowe and Elmer E. Layton. Tea arrangements were in charge of Mrs. Paul Charles.
