He assumes he got the mumps from teammate Tanner Glass or from an opponent. On Thursday the Rangers announced that forward Lee Stempniak had also been placed in isolation and was being tested for mumps. "We're playing some good hockey so that's the last thing we need," Brassard said. "We're just hoping it's not going to go around our team, it's not going to go around the league. I don't think we need that." TALBOT DEAL DONE: The Rangers announced on Friday that they had come to terms with goaltender Cam Talbot on a one-year contract extension worth $1.45 million through the 2015-16 season.

Talbot was due to be an unrestricted free agent at season's end. The 27-year-old has appeared in seven games as the Rangers' backup this season posting a 2-3-1 record with a 2.34 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and two shutouts. In 28 appearances in the past two seasons with the Blueshirts, Talbot is 14-9-2 with a 1.80 GAA and a .936 save percentage. Justin Upton ond in the second period, and the Islanders went on to a 2-1 victory overhost Detroit. Lee was credited with a tie-breaking goal after a replay review, and the Islanders held on for their fifth straight victory at Joe Louis Arena.

They have not lost in Detroit since 2003. Brock Nelson scored in the first nerind for the 1 Islanders, and he also had an assist on Lee's goal. Hen- rik Zetterberg scoredforthe Red Wings. Patrik Elias scored the only goal of the shootout to give goaltender Keith Kinkaid his first NHL win, and the host Devils snapped a five-game skid with a 3 -2 victory over Tampa Bay. Kinkaid stopped shootout attempts by Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov and Jonathan Drouin and made 26 saves in the game.

Adam Henrique and Elias scoredforthe Devils. MURRAY QUESTIONABLE DeMarco Murray is listed as questionable against Indianapolis after the NFL rushing leader did some work in practice this week for Dallas with a broken left hand. Murray went through individual drills Wednesday before expanding his role in workouts Thursday and Friday. He says he will ultimately decide whether to play on Sunday. BYSTEPHEN LORENZO NEW YORK DAILYNEWS DERICK BRASSARD (mumps) admitted things were "rough" in his return to the practice ice on Friday, but the Rangers center was still hopeful that he could return to the lineup Saturday night against the Hurricanes.

Brassard wasn't surprised to see a bit of rust after spending the last five days in isolation, the NHL's mandatory protocol for players who have been affected by the virus that is sweeping the league. "I'm probably one of the best Call of Duty players in the world right now," Brassard said. "I played a lot of video games, a lot of TV, that's the frustrating part. I couldn't see anyone, couldn't get out and go for walks. That's why I was pretty rusty today.

Coach Alain Vigneault and Brassard both said that he would likely take part in the club's morning skate in Raleigh before a decision is made on whether or not he can play. Brassard said he woke up in Edmonton during the Rangers' Padres land Landing another of baseball's top power hitters, the San Diego Padres acquired Atlanta outfielder Justin Upton on Friday in a trade that sent four prospects to the Braves. The Padres already made two huge trades in recent days to get outfielders, acquiring slugger Matt Kemp from the Los Angeles Dndaers and former AL Rook- RBSW ie of the Year Wil V) Myers from Tarn- bb pa Bay. Upton had 29 homers and 102 RBIlastseason. The Braves acquired lefthander Max Fried, infield er Jace Peterson, third baseman Dustin Peterson and outfielder Mallex Smith.

The Giants are keeping a key member of their World Series rotation, bringing back Jake Peavy. The righthander agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract to stay with the World Series champions, two people familiar with the negotiations said. Peavy and righthander Sergio Romo were undergoing physicals in Arizona, and San Francisco wasn't expected to make a formal announcement until early next week. Romo is set to receive a two-year, $15 million contract. ISLANDERS, DEVILS WIN Anders Lee knocked the puck over the goal line for a split-sec NBAD Westchester Knicks at Maine 7 p.m.
