The Willa Tree By Wjlla Albee Today I listened as some one talked of how fortunate we are to live in a time of all the luxuries and conveniences that are available for us. They mentioned modern transporation, fine restaurants and super markets. Also rapid communications and other things in our lives that are ultra modern. All this is true I'm sure but then again I'm not so sure. I'm glad that I can remember a period of time when we were more disadvantaged.

Have you been to a self serve laundry lately? It's just that- self serve. My mother used to take me with her to the 'Help Yourself Laundry." It wasn't a laundromat because nothing was automatic but when we drove up, out rushed the man who ran it, to carry in our baskets. He filled three tubs of water that stood around an old square wringer maytag washer. Mother just had to say two cold and one hot, or what ever temperature she wanted in each tub or ask him to change one. He was ready to carry our clean clothes out to the car again.

So maybe she did have to feed them into the wringer. Where else could you find such friendly help. I'm happy to remember when one could pick up the telephone, tell a friendly operator that you wanted to talk to Joe Jones in Kalamazoo and then just sit and wait while a cheerful voice when about getting the telephone number of Joe Jones from an information somewhere then if Joe didn't answer this same friendly voice offered to try again later and about every 20 minutes she called to report either that Joe still was not home or that she flow has him on the line waiting to talk to you. Doesn't sound like the resentful voice that says can dial that number yourself," does it? Also they didn't charge you extra just for hearing an operator on the line. Does anyone else remember when you could call the drug store to order a coke and a magazine and quicker than you could wink a boy on a bicycle was there with it.

Also my mother used to call in her grocery order and our faithful Mr. Stevens was there with' it ho time. (I must say that this is a custom that can still be found in our very own Eufaula) I do believe that it's not done anyplace else, certainly not the City I resent to no end expected to pay for a steak dinner after I have been forced to carry my own tray to make 14 trips all over the place trying to get the bare necessities required to eat that steak with. There was a time when they would even bring.you a glass of water. My list is long, but anyway, it was fun to live when we had a morning and afternoon mail delivery to the box on our front porch.

Maybe we didn't loose World War II but we sure lost a lot when all of the business places found out they could make the customer wait on himself. A big thanks for living in Eufaula where the druggist namely George or John will open up on Suynday to get your prescription or where J. M. and Betty still furnish a knife and fork with your steak, where Verby and Sharon will let you take something next door and try it, and Jim Lemonds will go an extra mile to help and Marshall and Mildred are the very nicest ever. No place else but Eufaula can you get even a small taste of the friendly service of times past.
