Yesterday Sheriff Hill, of Neosho took from our jail the notorious John Ellis and Tom Ferguson, a lias Henry Luther, two' hrse thieves, for the purpose of taking them to Oasge Mission for trial.

Our readers will remember that John Ellis was eaptured a short time since in-the Indian Territory and taken to Thayer for prelimina ry trial, and committed, to jail at this place. He is of Irish descent, about 40 years old, 5 ft. 7 In. high, light complexion, and sandy whis- kers and hair. He lives near the locality of the Bender tragedy, in this state.

The officers have long known him as a desperate character, but until now he has escaped the clutch es of the law. Tom Ferguson, aliaH Henry Lu ther, was arrested a few weeks ago, charged with' stealing horses and cattle near Osage Mission. He was committed to jail In this city to await his trial. He is about 30 years old, 5 ft. 10 In.

high, slenderly built, has long arms and long legs, a keen black eye, and rather braggadocio in appearance. He is known to have been en gaged in stealing horses near Seua- lia, about the 1st of May last; when it was supposed that he was killed: but it seems that he was only wounded. Distriotcourt is now in session in Neosho county, and they will probably have their trial this week. LETTER FROM A. CARTER.

Railroad Train Robbery in Illinois Train Robbery Crops, The following extracts are taken from a latter received from Amos Carter, dated July 1875: At 7:30 p. m. we found ourselves on the Vandalia cars passing thro' the tunnel under the city of St. Ixmls.thence across the great bridge and soon gliding swiftly eastward over Illinois plains. Nothing marred or "disturbed our repose until about midnight, when we baited at Long Point, a watering tank a few miles from any station and 35 miles west of Terre Haute.

We were suddenly aroused by the sound of pis tol shots In quick succession up near the engine, and the extremely sudden departure of the engine and Adams Express car, leaving the balance of the train standing at the tank. Robbers robbers I rang out from car. to car, and considerable excitement prevailed some closed the window-shutters and doors and got down low on the benches or seats. Revolvers were oalled for. and upon a canvass of the matter not a passenger could produce a single shooter, until at last one man rose up from his seat and calmly said: "Gentlemen, I have a little pistol (all eyes were gladly turned toward him), but it's in my valise with the express car that's gone with the robbers." Why, I tell you, we felt like hanging the fellow, almost, for disappointing us so.

In a half hour the conductor, with four or five others started after the engine and car, also with a con pie of armed soldiers and on going two miles they found them all quiet and safe, standing on the track, and the robbers all gone. On mounting the engine, the dead body of the en gineer was found, having been shot through the heart while at his post. Ere this you have had the whole story, in tho papers, and we will simply say it was a little ticklish, and kind o' made the hair stand on end to be called up so hurriedly and nnder such circumstances too. The engineer was an old employe of the company very much respected and recently married. We don't think the James brothers were the robbers and murderers on this occa sion, notwithstanding the papers say so.

It was too bunglingly done to be placed to their credit. We ar rived in Indianapolis two hours late. Crops in Indiana are fair, gener ally speaking, and oats and grass are splendid. only medi um. Corn, generally drowned out, so much nas it rained.

The best corn we saw in the state was 25 acres, almost shoulder high, raised by a Mr. Coomer on the farm of J. D. Carter, southwest of the city. We saw hundreds of acres of sickly, yellow-looking corn, standing in water all along the road, Vegeta Dies are cheap, necause they are plenty, and the markets are over oaded.

Flour, from per hundred meal, 60c per bushel corn, boo. liuslness in indianapo- is is only fair, except building, and that is quite lively. I was aston ished at the large, number of busi ness bonnes under process of erec tion. The city numbers now near 107.0U0 Inhabitants. Kents are high and dwelling houses Bcarce.
