MARTIN' 8NAPP HENRY PRESTON- ROSE CARSON IRA MoGINNiS AJinpdon Friday July 2 1869 STATE TICKET FOR GOVERNOR GILBERT WALKER of Norfolk Fon lieutenant governor: '7 JPHNF LEWIS 'J of Rockingham Vor attorney GENERAL JAMES TAILOR of Montgomery FOR CONGRESS JAMES GIBSON of Washington We give below the candidates heretofore announced FOR THE SENATE REES EDMONDSON JAMES GREEVER FOR" THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES GEORGE GRAHAM john terry INGRAM A Few Words Poor Itlen We can address this class freely and familiarly because we belong to it have belonged to it all our lives and expect to belong to it as long as we live We heard a few days ago to our great surprise that there are several cf this class in this county with whom we are acquainted who have expressed a determination either not to vote or if they should to vote for Wells and the Constitution just as it is because he is the friend of the poor man and because the Constitution unexpurgated affords the best protection to the poor man We hope our information is incorrect but it came to us from a source to leave no doubt of its truth We know that the scalawags and carpet-baggers have tried to make the impression all ove the State that the Radical parly fosters the rights and interests of the poor men and negroes but we had not supposed that there was an intelligent white man in the State who could be' made to believe such clap-trap or anything else that such men could say to them in politick matters There is one thing that our people should always keep in view and that is a carpet-bagger in Virginia is only after office and spoils and we defy any man to put his finger upon one who does not either hold an office or is trying to get one As to a scalawag or a native Radical he is not worthy of any kind of redit on any occasion or on any subject at place for the plain reason that a man who for the sake of getting office at the hands of the oppressors of his people will turn his back upon his neighbors his kindred his home and his race should not be trusted believed or respected Now these are the characters that deceive and mislead not only the negroes lut many of the poor white men of the country and these are the characters who have deceived and misled the men to whom we refer in the beginning of this article We have a word of truth for them and as some of them take our paper we hope they will read and ponder what we have to say to them As sure as they live if they vote for Wells and the Constitution as it is or either of them they will vote to rivet the chains of poverty which now hang loosely about them For instance one of them lives on the southern slope Mountain and pays one-third of his crop as rent Suppose he votes the Radical ticket the policy of which party is in the county organization scheme to increase the taxes upon real estate fourfold does he suppose he can rent land for one-third of its product? If he does he is sadly mistaken Should Gov Wells' be elected and the Constitution adopted as it is no land-holder could afford to rent his land for less than half or two-thirds of what it might produce nor will they be able in hiring labor to pay-more than half the amount they now pay The poor man therefore in our honest and candid opinion who votes the Radical ticket votes to keep himself in poverty his wife and children in rags But says one he afford to send his children to school and by electing Wells and adopting the Constitution education will be free Well education will be free any how under Walker and the Constitution for it is not proposed to vote that feature out but i with a Conservative Governor and Legislature it may be so modified as not 'obe unbearably odious and at the same lime open the door of education to the poorest child in the Commonwealth Capt Graham one of our candidates for the Legislature made a speech in the Court House on last Saturday night week and in the course of his remarks he said he had paid for labor the past year more than one thousand dollars saiij he this Constitution and elect Wells and I will not be able to pay one dollar for labor owing fco the weight of tax upon my land" Capt Graham was right he might -haye said that be would compelled to sell one acre to pay the tax upon another No nothepoor man who rents land to support himself and family is ruined beyond hope If Wells is elected and the Constitution adopted "as a whole We He ini Under this caption we find some plain practical views in the Norfolk Journal of Saturday last so plain practical and pointed that ive cannot resist the temptation to adopt them We hope that those of our readers who still stand aloof who still think that duty requires them to vote against the expurgated Constitution will read and reflect upon these views Says the Journal are glad to observe that the opposition to the Constitution is befomitig less and less and we trust that by the 6th of July not many will be found who will give the very strangely contradictory vote the Constitution and for Col Such a vote should more properly read the Constitution and for Wells for it meaps nothing else as a fact whatever may be its signification as a compliment to Colonel Walker If all the citizens of Virginia were to deposit such a suffrage as this the Constitution and for Mr the result would certainly be that the Constitution would be rejected and with it Colonel Walker VVe should have Wells again installed in his present position as the lery least calamity that could befil us There is every reason to believe he would then he armed with far greater powers of mis chief than he now possesses but the probability is far greater than the unexpurgated Constitution would be thrust down our throats for our resistance to the reconstruction laws The utter absurdity of such a contradictory vote is becoming more and more apparent as the day of election approaches and our people begin to look at the dreadful gulf into which they may be precipitated by following the queer advice given them by those really opposed to reconstruction muter any shape The terrible possibility of the election of Wells and reflection upon the frightful consequences to our material interests fi om such a catastrophe have made many men formerly against any part of the Constitution come out in favor of making the best of the circumstances allowed to them We have been surprised to meet men from whom we least expected such a sentiment declare that they were going for the expurgated Constitution and urging all their friends to take the same course The truth is that tjie men of property are becoming frightened at the bare contingency of the reclothing with power such a foul political ogre as Wells Men that own lands stocks of the State or of any corporations who aie engaged in any sort of business depending upon the prosperity rf the community have been brought to calculate what vill be the worth of their lands their stocks or their business under such a fellow- as Wells evc-r if he i retained with hi- present power only But it takes no ghost to tell them that if the unexpurgated Constitution is crammed down our throats by a Radical Congress and with it Wells and the negro Harris all prosperity is at an end in Virginia from which will be excluded all immigration as if the plague raged throughout our borders to which capital can never be induced to flow in which guant poverty will reign in which carpetbag supremacy will be established upon a firm foundation and from which will flee every man that can get away and none sooner than the very men now so fierce against any Constitution people must remember that the present is no contest those of the good old times The State of Virginia has permission to vote one of two ways If she gives one suffrage well enough but if the other Wells and woe will be her portion We must look the s'tuation full in the face and realize its dangers With an unscrupulous and cunning foe to contend with we know not to what means he may resort for the purpose of defeating the of Virginia The danger is imminent and this is no time for such trifling as that of gvi-ing a vote one part of which defeats the other and which if it prevails will certainly place Wells in power and destroy Virginia No let us come up fully to the mark give Colonel Walker a real support by voting for the expurgated Constitution favored by Gen Grant and by Congress and thus place the people of Virginia in a position into which they can right themselves and in eighteen months prepare a Constitution constructed to suit (O As neithei Wells nor Chandler can be coaxed or cuffed into another discussion with Col Humes but shy off from him like toads from a snake we hope they will persuade Forney or Van Wyck or Carrington to come along this way as Col' Humes is now fully in the tanning business $em Count We fear that our hold on and divide the vote Two of them should decline at once otherwise they miy all be be item and the county be misrepre-ented by a scalawag The two who may voluutaii-ly withdraw will be held in
