Page 12A Garden City Telegram Friday, INovember 25. l<>77 The Gossip Column Helen Hayes Award of Her Title' By ROBIN ADAMS SLOAN Q: Helen Hayes always seems too plain, so sur prisingly unassuming, con sidering her status. What',' she really like? — P.O. Bethesda, Md. A: Miss Hayes, though deliberately unfancy in public, is well aware of her position as "First Lady of the American Theater," a title which she cherishes. And from her lofty perch, she can be quite a mistress of the left-handed compliment. A while back, a young actress who'd received glowing notices for her work on a TV drama met Helen on the street and the great star dispensed some of that left- handed praise. The girl said she could have cheerfully strangled Helen, who made her feel like anything but an actress. Q: Has ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev managed to get his mother out of the USSR? — P.M., Detroit. A: Nureyev is trying to spare his aging mother from another Russian winter. So far, he has tried, among other things, getting names on a petition. His latest idea is to find a distinguished conductor who would be willing to launch into a public protest during a performance. are contradictory. According to a new biography by Charles Higham, Marlene turned 75 on Dec. 27,1976. But perhaps the only time we'll know for sure is when Marlene completes her memoirs on which she's reportedly working in Paris. Hayes: left-handed praise A.J. Foytin LA Times 500 A. J. Foyt, four-time Indianapolis 500 winner, is expected to make one of his rare appearances in a NASCAR Grand National stock car championship race when CBS Sports broadcasts highlights of the L.A. Times 500 on "CBS Sports Spectacular," Saturday, Nov. 26 (3:30-5 PM CST) on the CBS Television Network. Also on the same program will be a preview look at the race for the eight playoff spots in the National Football League, as 28 team sex- perience the "countdown to Super Bowl," and highlights of the eighth event for some of "The World's Strongest Men." The L.A. Times 500 is the finale of a 30-race National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing season, and promises to be a battle of some of stock car 'racing's best. Already committed to the race, besides Foyt, are Cale Yarborough (1977 Grand National Champion) and six-time champion Richard Petty. Nureyev: now a conductor Q: For as long as Marlene Dietrich has been around, I've been a devoted fan. How old is Marlene? — C.B., Newark, N.J. A: Her biographers and legions of followers have been trying to figure that one out for years. Marlene has always been secretive about the subject and official references '60 Minutes' Segment Named "Marixa," a report by "60 MINUTES" co-editor Morley Safer and producer Al Wasserman on a unique approach to the treatment of cancer in children, was named winner of the Second Annual Media Award presented by the American Cancer Society in the television news documentary category. The award-winning segment, broadcast on "60 MINUTES" last January 30, focused on Marixa Lao, a teenage patient at Children's Hospital, Stanford, Calif.,: where the approach to treatment of the disease includes family involvement and optimism rather than an attitude of 'impending doom. Don Hewitt is executive producer of the weekly magazine series. Another award winner, in the television program series category, was "Love Has a Spot on Its Lungs," an episode from the CBS Television Network series "Good Times." The Washington Redskins play host to the Dallas Cowboys in a national broadcast that begins at 3 PM, CST, following six regional presentations, as CBS Sports covers National Football League action on the CBS Television Network, Sunday, Nov. 27. Brent Musburger, Phyllis George, Irv Cross, sports essayist Jack Whilaker, and Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder are featured on "The NFL Today," Emmy award- winning live pre-game, halftime, and post-game broadcasts focusing on sports news, including highlights of all the important games in the NFL, film features, and special features. Marlene: new book says 75 IMAGINARY ILL: A famous singer-actress has practically disappeared from sight because she is certain she has incurable cancer. (She doesn't). Her doctors have tried unsuccessfully to convince her that she's in good health but she is positive they are keeping the awful secret from her. Q: With so many big-name marriages and romances going bust, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that Al Pacino is breaking up with girlfriend Marthe Keller. Are they? — H.W., Valley Stream, L.I. A: No. Pacino and Marthe, of course, are paired as screen lovers in "Bobby Deerfield." Their off-screen romance appears on such solid footing that Marthe is turning down a number of film offers saying she's content right now to be with her five-year-old son — and Al. Marthe recently finished Billy Wilder's film, "Fedora," but it might be a while before she takes on another assignment. ALIEN BEINGS: That $18 million UFO film, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," produced some strange encounters of its own during the filming. Star Richard Dreyfuss was impersonated by a bearded look- alike in Florida who signed autographs and gave interviews. And when director Steven "Jaws" Spielberg returned from shooting in Alabama and Wyoming, he found that an impostor had been running up bills in his name all over Hollywood. ROCK CRUSHER: A lot of rumors around about Fleetwood Mac, who have the number one • album, "Rumours" (appropriately enough). Talk is that despite all the success this year, that group is going to break up any minute. Robin Adams Sloan welcomes questions from readers.
