"lO—Uklah Dally Journal, (jkiah, Calif.Sunday, January 22, 197ft m ••RATES (Family War^tAdii) IS open aiSonoma State •ROHNERT PARK "There's no pubiic art gallery like it north of San Francisco ' to the Canadian border." Opening just iii time for the spring semester; the new $2.3 million art building at Sonoma State College is a striking edifice that art department chair Susan Moujton observes will have faciUties for the general public, incliiding the spacious gallery, as well as for stude'nts. "It may be the best art facility in the state system, especially for its size," asserts Nore Thiesfeld,'director of the SSC's campus planning office. Designed by architects Anshen and Allen of San Francisco (with considerable input from Sonoma's art faculty), the structure houses 12 classrooms, 17 faculty ^offices and m^y additional ' amenities in 46,000 square feetrTodd Construction Cov of Sahta Rosa was the contractor. Cozily wrapped around SSC's small scenic lake, the new' structure is an architectural beauty in design and scope and should be a. great boom to the college's growing art department. "Every prospective student we've taken to see the new SRmanin copter crash TOKYO, Japan (UPI) U.S. military authorities . .today released the names of four Marines killed when their helicopter crashed in a snowstorm near Mt. Fuji Wednesday. The four were identified as 1st ht. Michael J. aiaughnessy, 25, of Cocoa, Fla.; 1st Lt, Antonio P. Aguilar, 26, of Las Cruces, N .Mi; Cpl. Manuel Valledor, 19, of Hialeah, Fla., and Lance Cpl. Michael J. Hassler, 19, of Santa Rosa, Calif. Patrick Eisan manager of Ukiah Safeway Safe>yay Stores, Inc. has announced the recent promotion of Patrick D. Eisan to manager of its store located at 633 S. State St. in Ukiaji to replace Dean Nelson, who has retired from the food firm. Born in New Meadows, Idaho, Eisan grew up in Fortuna and after high school graduation attended California Polytechnic and Humboldt State Colleges. He joined Safeway in 1965 as a food clerk in Fortuna. He was' promoted to first assistant manager in 1968 in Fortuna and was appointed assistant stor« manager in McKinleyville in 1968. ;He also served as assistant manager in Fort Bragg, and was later appointed .storp manager in 1973 in McKinleyville where he has served until his most recent, promotion: building has imniediately gone to get an application to the college," comments Dr. Moulton. Simplicity and warmth were the goals of the design; she affirms. 'JNothing should conflict with what the art students are producing." Keypoints of the design are the redwood frame and floors, white walls, ahd, most especially, a vast amount of natural light filterfed into the spacious workshops and classrooms through skylights and hugei windows. "It's an extrenriely functional facility," says an en- thusiatic Dr. Moulton, Together with a broad range of advanced equipment and the prestigious art faculty, "students will have access to tools and facilities better than they can get almost anywhere in the state." Highlights of the new structure ate the huge public gallery, large printmaking and sculpture studios, a foundryroom and kiln room for metal sculpture and ceramics. Other attractive features- include large, well-lit painting studios; a huge wood and metal machine shop; filmmaking facilities for video, still photography and film; a darkroom for the printmaking area; more than 400 student lockers; and, ample electrical outlets and platforms for students to work outside in the handsomely designed cour- tyda-ds or along the lake. Dr. Moulton is particularly pleased with the roomy gallery which will be formally introduced to the public with a major show featuring international artists scheduled for February or March. With 28-foot ceilings, the gallery can accompdate monumerttal sculptures and paintings, and is designed so an outdopr courtyard is part of the interior space. A resident of Sebastopol and, actively involved in the community as financial advisor to Sebastopol's Sun^- merfield Schbol and a member of the Twin Hills School District Parent Teachers Association and the CETA Advisory Board, Dr. Moulton .strongly supports greater accessibility of the campus to the community. If gallery funds are available, she hopes to begin a "Friends of the Gallery" program whereby people could enroll in art history courses in exchange for work hours in the gallery.' An increase in art night classes is also projected to ehable more citizens to take advantage of the new art facilities. Students will, of course, be the major beneficiaries of the new building. Currently some 300 SSC students are art majors with up to 1,200 taking art classes. But students" have been turned away in the past due to the cramped facilities the department had. in its former location. "When the word is out about the new building, opines Dr. Moulton, "we expect student enrollment to go up dramatically."
