Incorporated 1901 Published Every Afternoon. (Except Sunday) Place of Publication Republican Building, Give Him a Chance Now that George T. Olliver of Pitts-burr has been elected United States Senator to succeed Senator P. C. Knox, let tbose who have reen filing strenuous objections against him sit up and take notice of his personality and qualifications.

His- opponents claim he is a machine politician, but this ob jection was not enough to command any serious opposition; consequently the people generally throughout the State must instinctively know that Mr. Oliver stands as even a chance in his new position of making good as any other untried official. George Oliver comes from a family that has materially helped to make Pittsburg great. His ancestors were workers and achievers, and he, himself, is a man of energy and affairs. He is thoroughly familiar with the business and legislative needs of Pittsburg, which are practically the same throughout the State and Nation.

He undoubtedly lacks legislative training and experience, but these will come in time, and the probabilities are that if he continues in the Senate he will make his presence felt there in the same manner that the Oliver name has figured in the progress and development of Pittsburg. Long and Short of it Washington, March 23-With the admission of "fobe" McConnell, a dwarf, to the Washington County Home that institution now houses the shortest and the tallest adult persons in the county. Pat was the first inmate to accost "Tobe" when the latter arrived, and the two promise to become fast friends.

Special Grand Jury Galled For the first time since the Home' stead riots a special grand jury has been called, the one that reported yesterday having been instructed to reconvene on April 12. Four true bills against six persons were returned by the grand jury. Frank A. Griffin, a banker; Henry L. Bolger, a saloonkeeper; Dallas C.

Byers, a manufacturer: Select Councilmen Charles Stew art and Dr. W. H. Weber and Com mon Councilman John F. Klein, were- indicted.

Changes ia Prices It is predicted that changes in prices will follow quickly on agiicul tural products, following the announcement of the tariff bill. On tea and sugar, it is said the prices will soar upward, and on some other articles as well The tariff on sugar will be reduced but four one-hundredths of a cent a pound, according to the bill being brought down from 1 and ninetv-five one-hundredths of a cent to 1 and ninety-one one-hundreds of a cent per pound, but this is sufficient to make the merchants and wholesale dealers sit up and take notice.

The retail merchants never have made anything scarcely on refined sugar, and any way that they can raise their profit will be taken advantage of by them, it is certain. Exchange.
