Thursday. June 26, 1958 THE NEW MEXICAN 19 . - ..-. . 'A, ''Jm .- . . - j. . -s. Sj - V, ""4 ( . -j& RICO ALANIZ Movie Heavy Feels AtHome In Santa Fe On Santa Fe: Nothing offends the eye here. There are no straight lines. I seem to feel I've been here before. The people in Santa Fe don't try to be hospitable and friendly, they don't work at it. They are. To Rico Alaniz, Mexican-born heavy in the Walt Disney troupe filming The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca, coming to Santa Fe is almost like coming home. This is closer to what I imagined as home as a child. His native Juarez does not live up to the childhood picture. A mafure man, a character player, Alaniz falls into the category of an old pro, the professional actor who has a job to do and isnt particularly concerned with frills. Very few people recognize me from one role to another, he comments, although he has been In the business for several years. He works in 35 to 40 television shows a! year, plus movies. In the Baca story, he portrays the shameless one, a real villain-type whom Baca trails to Mexico and captures. He is quite at home in westerns. He has been riding since a child, has taught his wife to ride, is a regular customer at California horse stables. Most of the wranglers like me, he confides, because I know how to treat a horse. Generally, when on location, Alaniz writes notes to his wife, not letters. In Santa Fe, he says, he has been writing short books. After finishing this film he plans to return to California, pick up his wife and family and vacation in Mexico. Before he crosses the border he will stop in Santa Fe again, so my wife can see what Ive been! writing aboutf Alaniz was born in Juarez, but he will bring his wife home, for a time, to Santa Fe.
