The I 0 virtually eliminated Busker chances of picking up a fifth straight Big Eight championship, but the red-jerseyed grid- ders went down fighting just as head coach Bob Devaney had promised they would. Nebraska was the winner in the three major statistical categories, outgaining the Buffs by 178-110 rushing, 224-72 passing and leading in first downs by 20-14. But that is little consolation to the proud Huskers since they lagged on scoreboard by five points.

It was our game plan to gamble. We felt that we had to gamble to win. We want to let them iype us as to what we would the Cornhusker boss explained after the battle with the Buffs Saturday. The gambling was in opening up the offense. The Cornhuskers came out in a new alignment, threw the ball more on early downs and took chances they might not ordinarily take like running on fourth down at their own 29.

But In the end, it was a Colorado defensive secondary that had intercepted 13 passes this season which turned the win for the Buffs, intercepting four of Frank passes and returning two of them for touchdowns.

The first of many turning points came midway in the second quarter with the Huskers leading 7-0 and a fourth and one situation at their own 29. Nebraska chose to go for the first down rather than punting and Patrick failed to get the needed yardage. Five plays later, speedy Larry Plantz took a pitchout from quarterback Bob Anderson and galloped six yards into the end zone. Dave first of three successful conversions was good for a 7-7 tie with 5:35 left in the half. Then with the Huskers fighting to gain the a 1 f- time lead, Dick intercepted a Patrick pass at the 28 and appeared to be stopped at the Nebraska 43.

However, the Coloardo senior handed the ball back to defensive end Mike Veeder, who carried it another 45 yards into the Husker end zone and Colorado had a 14-7 lead with 49 seconds remaining in the half. Nebraska, still fighting as they did throughout the contest, came back with another effort in the final 49 seconds and a pass interference call on the Isaac Howard against Dennis Richnafsky put the ball at the Colorado four with no time left on the clock. Since a quarter cannot end on a penalty, the Huskers were given an extra play and Dick Davis bolted toward the end zone, but fumbled and Bosch recovered in the end zone, ending the half. Nebraska made its most impressive offensive effort of the season after taking the second half kickoff and moved 80 yards to score what looked like the tying touchdown with Joe Orduna bursting through a big hole on the right side of the Colorado line and going 27 yards for the TD. But Dick broke through to block Bill extra point kick and the Huskers trailed by one with left in the third quarter.
