.TWENTY EVENING TIMES, CUMBERLAND, MD., TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1952 Phone 4600 for a WANT AD Taker * Assignment: America ModePs Life Proves Dull For Inez Who Takes Marlene's Place In Shou (Reg. D. 8. Pat, OHO By INEZ aOBB NEW YORK — (INS) — Life's triumphs are few and far between. On this basis, I hope you will bear with me for a moment. Recently I was called in to substitute at a fashion show for Miss Marlene Dietrich, and have not been the same since. Any resemblance between myself and Miss Dietrich is not only purely coincidental but simply amazing, most of all to me. Aside from the fact we are both women, all similarity ends. However, at the last moment before a fashion show in which the ageless glamor girl was to be one of the stars, Miss Dietrich was forced to cancel out. This created a dire or five-alarm emergency. The harassed director, an old friend of mine, called in a state of extreme agitation—which probably explains the whole thing— and asked me to act as a ringer fo Miss Dietrich. I reminded my distraught frien that I bore no resemblance to Miss Dietrich either from the neck u or the knees down and she agree a little tog instantly for tact. However, she poured butter on th wound by reminding me that I ca: still wiggle into a dress with 24-inch waist. Then the trutr outed: I could wear tKe model clothes without refitting, and ther was now no time for such non sense. So began—and ended, undoubted ly — my contact with the brigh tinsel world of the professiona model. The huge dressing room wa jammed with hangers filled witr dozens of the most beautiful dresse in the world and crowded with fift t of the prettiest and most famou HAVE YOU LOOKED AT YOUR WATER HEATER LATELY ? Well, I had spent some years in a girls' dormitory and additional ones In a sorority house, so this didn't bother me. What I did find disconcerting was the number of men who bustled in and out of the dressing room or who were stationed .there to keep an eye on the priceless furs, jewels and clothes. But any perturbation I may have felt at first was dissipated within sixty seconds. Were these gents leering at the models in tneir Bikinis or less? No, a thousand times, no! Obviously fashion shows and models were old stuff to these boys. So help me, almost all had brought along a supply of comic books to keep themselves entertained! Other lads were studiously engaged with racing tip sheets, canasta or cat-naps. Two gents, whose blood pressures must be alarmingly low, argued the merits of Taft vs. Eisenhower. It was depressingly prim. A dresser removed my drab suit and dropped a Spring creation over my head. She started to zip it up and then recoiled, as from an adder. With cold disdain she said, "You'll have to take off all that underwear!" The tone implied I was swaddled in flannels. I looked down quickly to see if I was still sewn into my Winter woolies. But no, I was burdened only with the standard equipment of the modern woman: A girdle, panties, bra and slip. I meekly parted with the slip. "I don't believe I shall be able to breathe," I said, as Madam zipped me into the gown. "Then don't," she snapped and disappeared. Truth to tell, I did look grossly over-weight beside the models whose respective waistlines must be no more than 22 inches to reach professional standards this season. These kids are obviously made of gutta percha rather than flesh and bones, and without vital organs. There isn't much more to the episode, except that I am eternally grateful to Miss Dietrich for my initiation into this never-never world of New York's model girls. But as a steady diet, the life is too staid for me. K. C. Smoker Tonight Cumberland Council 586.
