To lessen the penalties of an export tax on wine, French wine merchants began distilling their product into a concentrate of high alcohol content to be diluted later. But people liked it as It was - and so brandy was born. When cooking root vegetables such as carrots, turnips or beets, add a bit of sugar to give them a sweet glaze. For pretty party fare, slice pitted black olives and slip the rings over a strip of anchovy, pepper or pimento and arrange on topof canapes or sandwiches. The White House was first open to the public on New Year's Day in 1801 and hostess Abigail Adams served "cakes and tarts, curds and cream, syllabub, trifles and floating island." LETTERS to EDITOR I wish to extend a word of commendation to the Forest Park Fire Dept. and Police who were on the scene and very expeditlously averted panic and calamity on the part of the residents In the "300" DesPlaines Bldg., Forest Park. The fire fortunately was confined to the incinderator on the top floor and naturally caused smoke filled halls. As they arrived, the tenants were notified by bell ringing and door knocking to go to the lobby. We complied and it seemed like no time and the condition was under control. It might have been carelessness on the part of a tenant. However, we were glad it didn't happen in an apartment. After we returned to our respective apartments, the firemen immediately proceeded to clear the halls of the smoke with a curtain device. It was an experience and after living in Chicago practically all my life, thought it remarkable on the part of the Forest Park firemen in the manner with which this was handled and the tenants were very calm in complying with their Instructions. Therefore, these comments are in their favor and Happy Seasons Greetings. D.
