The California Association of Nurserymen heartily recommends that you investigate the entire Clematis family before you select any vine for any purpose Let us use the ever-popular Clematis Armandi as an example Unlike other Clematis, this one is evergreen with large, glossy green leaves. During March and April it is covered with the above-mentioned fragrant, star-shaped white flowers. For best results, plant this vine in at least- partial shade since the hot summer sun will tend to burn the foliage. Once planted, do not become impatient. This vine is a slow starter, but once developed, it is off to the races. If you like the leafless look during the winter months, perhaps you will find deciduous species of Clematis more to your liking. There are many colors and growth habits to choose from. The Clematis Ramona has light blue blossoms appearing in July. Clc- matic Ramona has light blue bios soms appearing in July. Clematis Crimson Star produces bright crimson flowers from July to September. As with all vines. Clematis must be given the same care that you would devote to any member of your garden. This includes ample root space, loose friable soil and sufficient water during the dry season. They take either warm or cool conditions, but need shade at their roots for happiest results.
