Mr. Littlefield has been in horticulture for the past 32 years and for the past eight he has been lecturing on gardening and counseling gardeners. His visit is sponsored by the Bandini Fertilizer company and Cooke Gerden Sprays. Through his lectures, and the articles he contributes to garden magazines, Mr. Littlefield weaves his own homespun garden philosophy. He regards gardening not as a task but as an adventure in enjoyment. He avoids the solemn, ponderous approach With friendly informality, and a deft light touch, he discusses gardening fundamentals in a way that holds the interest of both expert and beginner. "Anyone," he maintains, "can become a successful gardener, merely by following through conscientiously on a few basic principles. I've been chatting about gardening with all kinds of folks, for over 25 years, and I have yet to meet anyone whd couldn't learn to grow many of the lovely, plants with which the good Lord blessed this earth!" Plant them with the top bud at soil level and mound some soil over them. The resultant growth needs no pruning until next winter at which time you'll select one strong cane and remove the others. In the meantime, just keep the young vine watered and let it grow. The result will be a strong root system at the end of its first' year. I About the only thing you know about a petunia, calendula or other flower plant that comes up from self-sown seed dropped by last year's plants is that it had seed which survived the winter.] Unfortunately, this is a poor, kind of natural selection for beauty, for you'll find that most all the flowers on volunteer petunias are of an unlovely mauve or dirty white color (the original native species colors), and that nice double calendulas from last year produce smaller, single-flowered offspring. So pull out the volunteer and plant freshly purchasd mixtures like the new Confetti, which has a planned formulation of bright colors.
