soundings Some of the bore holes have gone as deep as 400 feet but have not located the cavern where Noss said gold bars were like cords of Holeman said the next step is to do some blasting to gain access to caves She said the work is time-consuming and detailed and has to be planned and implemented carefully north of Santa Fe Police found photos of Byers along with baptismal certificates and official church seals in that car Flores said 1 Police said Byers and another man believed to be fellow escapee Ramiro Lopez fled the car in Tesuque after being chased by police They eluded capture despite a 24-hour search of the area involving at least 45 officers from eight different agencies four roadblocks and four helicopters Byers Lopez and Kip Wilson 29 escaped Sept 13 from the Sandoval County Jail by cutting a hole in a chain-link ceiling and climbing out of a fresh-air recreation room Wilson was captured five days later in Albuquerque It was second escape in five months from Sandoval County custody He escaped May 6 from the jail after ing into a three-piece suit and telling guards he was an attorney He was captured five days later near his house in Bosque Farms Byers pleaded guilty Aug 5 in Albuquerque to fraud and forgery charges He was sentenced to 16 years in prison by state District Judge Diane Dal Santo He had been accused of tricking homeowners out of credit cards and talking car dealers out of vehicles BERNALILLO Escaped con man Steven Byers stole at least four rental cars in Albuquerque last month but probably will not be taking any more Sandoval County sheriffs detective Ray Flores said Tuesday made the car companies aware of it so taken security he said Byers 29 who escaped from Sandoval County authorities in September for a second time went to rental agencies at the Albuquerque International Airport and simply drove away in cars that had keys left in the ignitions Flores said agencies usually leave the keys in cars on the lot and just take the last caf in Flores said of the time the rental companies know the vehicle had been Flores said Byers would return the car to the lot and take another The first theft was shortly after Byers escaped from the Sandoval County Jail on Sept 13 and the last one was Sept 26 Flores said know for sure of four he said He said Byers was linked to the stolen cars by witnesses and by papers and photos found in a rental car that he abandoned Fines dropped in toxic water case The Associated Press were from New Mexico three were in Oklahoma two were in Colorado and one was in Wyoming The penalties had been imposed Aug 3 The companies allegedly contracted with Inc a Carlsbad trucking and disposal company to discharge into Laguna Quatro in southeastern New Eddy County Produced water sometimes called oil field brine is highly salty ground water containing radioactive and other toxic The brine a waste product of oil production usually is injected deep underground where wildlife cannot be exposed The EPA alleges the discharges into Laguna Quatro violated a general Clean Water Act permit the agency issued in the spring of 1990 Alexander said Tuesday the general permit which covers all production in New Mexico states all such produced water must be injected underground He said that about a month ago he reviewed the actions against the companies ALBUQUERQUE The US Environmental Protection Agency has dismissed more than $4 million in civil penalties against 38 oil and gas companies accused of releasing tainted water into a salt playa attorneys for the 38 producers had asked me to review it That is what the decision to drop the fines said George Alexander regional counsel for the EPA in Dallas The EPA said 23 of the producers were Texas-based nine
