Wednesday, March 6, 2002 THE NEW MEXICAN B-3 Mens Room doesnt pull its weight Apart from the tactless setting and the gratuitous profanities, Mens Room is also rife with tired and lifeless lines such as: Let me guess: (The fight) was over a broad and You guys are crazy Ericson excites neither the pathos nor the shame of a cantankerous old Superman whose gruff exterior hides a sensitive inner core. At one point, when he is supposed to be (at the very least) unconscious, he springs to his feet before the lights are completely down. In no fewer than two instances, someone stands before a urinal, presumably urinating, for about five minutes. Rest assured, there is no subplot involving overdeveloped bladders. Another faux pas committed by at least half the cast is something usually covered in Acting 101: Dont jut your hands out in front of you every time you recite a line.

Its If there is any glimpse of talent revealed through the course of the play, it comes from John Rochester in the role of Allan Sullivan, the brides (you guessed it for the third time!) gay brother. His occasionally caricatyjIsh lines lend some life to an otherwise comatose production. Maybe the competition will be stiffer next year. Mens Room, a comedy by Bill Conway, runs through Sunday at the Armory for the Arts, 1050 Old Pecos Trail. Tickets are $12 and $15.

Call 984-1370 for more By EDDIE TAFOYA For The New Mexican True artistry can justify any subject matter. Consider Beckets Endgame, Tarantinos Reser-voir Dogs or even Seinfeld, a sitcom about nothing. In other words: Art is what you can get away with. In the case of the stage play Mens Room, a comedy by Bill Conway currently playing at Santa Fes Armory for the Arts, however, nobody gets away with anything. The plays premise is, at best, questionable, the acting mediocre and the dialogue flat and cliche-ridden.

Fur-. thermore, few characters are the least bit believable. This is especially disappointing when you consider that Mens Room won the Santa Fe Performing Arts Companys fourth-annual national playwriting competition. Makes you wonder about the competition. This is not to say that there is nothing interesting going on in this so-called comedy.

The opening sequence involves a Latina (surprise!) janitor named (surprise again!) Maria (Vallie Marie Rivera) who is mopping a mens lavatory in a swank hotel when her dead husband Review board postpones meeting Santa Fes Historic Design Review Board postponed its Tuesday meeting, according to James Hewat, the citys historic-preservation planner. The review board was to have considered Tuesday a request to make additions to three houses built in Plaza ChamiSal in the 1920s and 1930s by Katherine Stinson Otero, an early 20th century aviatrix. Plaza Chamisal is at the corner of Paseo de Peralta and Acequia Madre. Oteros heirs had initially asked the review board to be allowed to make 6,000 square feet of additions to the 11,000 square feet of housing at Plaza Chamisal. Otero built eight houses at the compound, which were later divided into 11 units.

However, the board was to consider additions to only three of the houses on Tuesday. Hewat said Hiesday the review board has not yet set the date for a new meeting. N.M. official to meet Vincente Fox New Mexicos Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron will meet with Mexican President Vicente Fox this week at the International Day of the Woman in Mexico City. The convention is an annual conference of female leaders from around the world.

I believe that all New Mexicans can benefit from the mutual exchange of ideas and goodwill between our countries, Vigil-Giron said in a written statement. Duke City schools to stay united Gov. Gary Johnson on Tuesday vetoed a measure that could have split up the Albuquerque Public Schools district. The bill would have directed the district be divided into at least three districtsif Albuquerque area voters approved the breakup. Johnson said at a news conference that the proposal would have increased operating costs.

Three smaller school administrations, he said, probably would be less efficient than the current district. The governor said the threat of a district split might lead to some innovation in Albuquerque schools. The local school board will consider having a private company operate some failing or troubled schools. Johnson said local officials agreed to that in talking to him about whether he planned to sign or veto the measure. Staff and wire reports the sonliness and fatherliness that has been lying dormant within each of them for lo, so many years.

And the great sages advice to his newfound archetypal You need to be who you are good, bad, all of it. Gimme a break. Apart from the tactless setting and the gratuitous profanities, Mens Room is also rife with tired and lifeless lines such as: Let me guess: (The fight) was over a broad, You guys are crazy, What the hell are you doing in here? and even one culled from a Budweiser commercial: I love you, man. As for the acting, Director Wayne Sabato doesnt get enough out of a cast that includes accomplished actors some who have appeared on the likes of The Bob Newhart Show, Mannix and The Milagro Beanfield War. appears in the mirror.

They converse as if this is an everyday occurrence, thus lending a touch of magical realism to the production. But that goes nowhere quickly. The story, as it turns out, really involves a group attending a wedding-rehearsal dinner. Before the night is over, some nine men and four women end up conversing amidst the urinals and toilets, where they have just about every kind of cliched heart-to-heart imaginable. The core story involves Nate, the 13-year-old brother of the groom (Brian Scarborough) and Frank Boyd (John Ericson), a washed-up, John Wayne-type actor, and the friendship they strike up in the land of urinals and grafitti.

No deal in the works in N.M. kidnapping case www.SantaFeNewMexican.com ca Country Club Living The Associated Press NEW YORK The case against a couple charged with the decades-old kidnapping of a toddler appeared to be moving toward a trial as lawyers agreed Tuesday there is no settlement in sight.

There is no deal on the table, said Assistant District Attorney Eric Rosenbaum, who is prosecuting Barry and Judith Smiley of Albuquerque for allegedly absconding with the boy they called Matthew Propp in 1980. Barry Smiley, using the name Bennett Propp, has sold items on Santa Fes Plaza for a number of years. Steven Brill, a lawyer for Judith Smiley, said there is no settlement deal, but he remains hopeful one can be reached. The lawyers appeared Tuesday before acting Justice Joseph Grosso in Queens state Supreme Cour. The next court date was set for March 25.

Propps maternal grandfather had arranged for the Smileys to adopt the baby at birth. But when the child was 15 months old, a judge ruled the adoption illegal because the biological mother had not INEMATHEQUEL982A338 mysterious obted at noon jOOAYjwtu THURS 5:30 4 12 SAM' EzlBSEB lAa fc54 Oman HACK HAWK DOWN ktkm hei e-TbrWS AKAUTFlAKSSm given her consent. The Smileys allegedly moved to New Mexico with the boy and lived under the aliases Bennett and Mary Propp. The Smileys surrendered last year on charges they absconded with the boy, who still lives in New Mexico. They had sought to have the case dismissed, arguing that they are in poor health and that they acted out of love for the child.
