PAGE FQfttY ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH ForeignLegion Veteran Tells Of Indochina THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 1954 Jfrtt — French military censorship in Indochina has prevented correspondents thw from filing eyewitness accounts of the bitfer fftfrtfnff raging at Ihp hr- sieged French Union fortrrss of Dien Bte» Phu. Here Is a rrporl from a veteran of that epir struggle, a German just returned home after release from the French Foreign Legion. By ULRtCH ORt FLENSBURG, Germany. /T-"I SPC It this way, knowing I lie men who art fightintt for Gen. rie Castries— if they can hold out until the last of Anril or the first of May, when the rainy season begins, j the French forces can win at Dion j Bien Phu." That opinion of the bloody north- • west Indochina battle was voiced ; here today by Horsl Lcmke, a blond 24-year-old German elect ri-i| dan. After five years In the French Foreign Legion, he was among the last to be flown out of the beleaguered fortress where Brig. Gen. Christian de Castries' outnumbered French Union troops are battling legions of the Commu- j nist-lead Vietminh rebels. Left March 7 . He left Dien Bien Phu March 7, just five days before rebel arUllery closed down the only air escape route from the encircled plain. "The fighting spirit of the French Union troops is wonderful and the men have a great and warm loyalty for Gen. de Castries," Lemkc said. "They'd go through blazing fires for him and they fight with bravery and with confidence. "You can't talk about fighting spirit when you talk about the Vietminh. "They don'J fight with loyalty; they always looked to me like they were blindly obedient machines, as though somebody behind them was forcing them forward mercilessly to their death. "They throw themselves at the defenses wildly. Much of It's at night. And it's bloody and vicious. "There's lots of hand-to-hand fighting— and I mean close hand- to-hand fighting. "It'i seldom If e.ver that any quarter is granted. "Casualties are heavy. The Communists don't care about their losses." 13,000 French Soldier* In all, Lemke said, there were then about • 12,000 French Union soldiers in the besieged garrison when he left. Reliable sources in Indochina believe paratroop reinforcements have swelled it to about 14,000 now, though the French have never announced their force's size. Attacking them are an estimated 45,000 Vietminh. Lemke said the Vietminh "come in at night, spilling out of the jungle around Dien Bien Phu. They swarm in like locusts and they biirst out of their foxholes." "Those devils are using Russian- made guns— and good ones too — tornmyguns, mortars, artillery and antiaircraft guns. Their radar- guided antiaircraft lire is murderous. "But their ground troops like to light with their knives and they swing them savagely in hand-to- hand fighting. "Sometimes It was like a nightmare to meet them In the light of the moon and to listen to their wild cries as they charged." Kills Himself Before Father Following Spat \ COLLINSVILLE, "ill. /P-A 49- year-old insurance agent whose famjly is prominent in civic affairs shot and killed himself in front of his father's home here Tuesday as his parent watched from a window. Chief of Police Richard Kohlhaas said Gustav Holzweg Jr. shot hjmseU in the head with a .45- caliber pistol. He said the elder Holzweg, president of the First Bank of Collinsville and the Home Savings and Loan Assn, was seated at a front window of his home and saw his son shoot himself. The elder Holzweg was quoted by Kohlhaas as saying he had a "small argument" with his son before the shooting. Cause of the argument was not revealed.' The younger Holzweg, whose brother, Edward G. Holzweg is president of the Collinsville Community Unit School Board, lived across the street from his father's home.
