University of Wisconsin Athletic Director Elroy Hirsch has formally told UW officials he will step down in June when he becomes 64. Hirsch, nicknamed Crazy Legs in his collegiate days, said this summer he would retire before turning 65 but gave no specific plans.

In a letter to UW-Madison Chancellor Irving Shain this week, Hirsch said he would like to serve out his tenure as a consultant and would like to help in the transition to his successor. A native of Wausau who played for Wisconsin, Michigan and the Los Angeles Rams, Hirsch is a member of the National Football Hall of Fame. He resigned as assistant to the president of the Rams to come to Wisconsin in 1969. That year, the Badgers had a 0-10 record in football and averaged 43,559 spectators per home Same. Since 1971, Wisconsins home atten-ance has fallen below 70,000 per game only three times.

Murphy promoted to Maine job ORONO, Maine Tim Murphy, an assistant football coach at the University of Maine for the past two seasons, was promoted Friday to heaa coach, a post left vacant by the departure of Eugene Buddy Teevens. Murphys appointment was announced at a news conference by Dale W. Lick, the university president. Murphy, the Black Bears offensive line coach and offensive coordinator, worked with Teevens at Boston University and came to Maine with him two years ago. Teevens, who compiled records of 6-5 and 7-4 at Maine, was named Tuesday as head coach at Dartmouth College, his alma mater.

In becoming Maines 31st head football coach, Murphy also succeeds Teevens in another category: he becomes the nations youngest Division I or Division I-AA football coach, a distinction held by Teevens up to now. Munihy and Teevens both are 30 years old, but Murphy is nine days younger than his former boss. Early KO keeps Czyz champion WEST ORANGE, N.J. Bobby Czyz used a right to the head and a barrage of punches to stop David Sears 61 seconds into the fight to retain his International Boxing Federation nfght heavyweight championship on Friday Czyz and Sears eyed each other for the opening 30 seconds and then Czyz caught his opponent with a devastating right to the head. The punch seemed to knock Sears senseless and Czyz foUowed with about twcnlozen punches to the head and body.

The last one sent Sears to the canvas, and referee Joe Cortez immediately stopped the scheduled 15-round bout. Promotor Carlo Dee said he plans to have Czyz, 24, of Wanaque defend his title early next year against Willie Edwards, the North American Boxing Federation light heavyweight champion. The fight was Czyzs first defense of the 175- Kiund crown he won on Sept. 6 in Las Vegas eY; by stopping sioban Kacar of Yugoslavia in the fifth round. The win was Czyzs 10th straight, and his record improved to 30-1 with 21 knockouts.

Sears of Howard Beach, N.Y., whose record fell to 17-3-1, was ranked seventh in the IBF ratings.
