THE DAILY COURIER-QAZETTE, THURSDAY EVENING, MARCH, 4, TIME TO WAKE UP, Standard Bred S. C. Rhode Island Reds Hmnb 1908 Government Enters Into Competition With Publishers. From time to time the press of the country has protested niildjy against the practice of printing envelopes for the public free of charge. However, there has been no concerted action, and the practice has reached the limit.

The postoffice department has just issued several million advertising circulars, urging patrons of the post office to have their printing done by the government. A great hue and cry about socialism is raised when any one suggests government ownership of public utilities, and if' one should suggest that it enter the dry goods and grocery business in competition with private enterprise, he would be called a yet the needs of poor would furnish a lunch better excuse for this than can be-offered for competing with the printers, for in the latter case it is only man who can afford to buy envelope8 in quantities, that is benefited. A fe leral cpurt "held the South Carolina dispensary law un. oustitutional on the ground that a state had no right to engage in a business that properly belonged to individuals, but what is sauce for the goose does not seem to be sauce for the gander. I' is high time for the printing interests to get busy, for if this sort of tiling gets started, where will it end? and 4th hen; 1st pen.

Cairn of I)nHas. About sixty witnesses were sworn and placed under the rule and both sides gave notice they bad other witnesses who were not in the city, but oing sure they would arrive did not request that any special process of ittaciinient be issued for them. The number of witnesses and the array of counsel gives evidence that the case is to be one of unusual in- erest an I perhaps long drawn out. The name of Dr. L.

Gregory, superintendent of the North Texas Hospital for the insane, appears among the witnesses for the defense. The taking of testimony, all preliminaries having been gotten through with, began at 10 a. m. The first witness placed on the stand was Dr. Veazey of Van Alstyne, who examined the body of the deceased and described the wounds upon his body.

In substance his statement was were seven but from the range he thought it possible that they all could have been made by three shots. Scott Fulton, editor and publisher of the Van Alstyne Leader, was the next witness placed on the stand. Both the defendant and deceased were employed in his office. The decease! had been a member of bis household for several years. He attributed to the deceased a splendid reputation and did not think he was possessed of a high or fractious disposition or temperament.

On this point he said that the, deceased had a sense of honor that caused him to quickly resent what he thought was an unfair imposition but that he did not brood over such matters nor harbor ill will. Later on when asked about the character of the defendant objection was made by the state that this was not the time to make such inquiry. As to the cause of the difficulty Mr. Fulton said he had no knowledge. Eggs $1 fori5.

The jury being withdrawn this matter of how Mr. Vowell happened to be in the case was gone into fore the court and in substance the I development was that it had been agreed between Mr. Vowell, who was county attorney at the time of the affair, and Mr.

Freeman, who was the democratic nominee and reason-' ably sure to succeed Mr. Vowell, that should the case be called to trial during Mr. incumbency Mr. Freemen would assist and should it be called after Mr. Freeman went in Mr, Vowell would assist.
