V oft Band States Return Concert At West Junior ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH Section 2 •» Pages 2140 ALTON, ILL., THURSDAY, APRIL 22. 1954 The University of Illinois Con- cprt Band was going to play a return engagement here. Buf unlike its previous concert, when players spent the night nt local hotels and therein mushroomed the guarantee prirp, management decided to p'.-it-e the students in local homes. One hundred twenty rooms to find for students and instructors looked like a pretty good problem for Lpiwy Frit/:, music consultant for the Alton public schools. And it was felt advisable to have them all in the city or at its edges, with a view to quick, easy transportation. But Fritz was smiling over the results early last week. Though it looked like a close call for a while, a closing surge had brought in offers of i-ooms for 150 musicians. That, he expected, should leave room for emergencies to arise in at least a few households: "Suppose one of the kids should break out with the measles, or someone should go to the hospital." he suggested. "I think it's wonderful the" way folks have cooperated in bringing the band here." "Just about the time I was down to where I needed about 30 more players accommodated, the Municipal Band came through with an offer to help us get almost any numbet 1 of rooms we wanted." The concert, under auspices of the Madison CounrV School Band Directors Association, will be played at West Junior High Auditorium Sunday afternoon, April 25, at 3 o'clock daylight time. It's likely, Fritz thinks, that tickets still will be available for sale at the door. School instrumental students and members of Band Parent Associations have them on sale. East St. Louisan Has Perfect Score In Driving Test ST. LOUIS JP — A 23-year-old East St. Louis; 111., mother, alarmed by rising traffic deaths, compiled a perfect score in a driving test for women sponsored by •the St. Louis Safety Council Tuesday. Only two other drivers have had perfect scores in the 30 years the test—which includes a written examination as well as actual driving—has been offered by the council. This year's test attracted 324 women. Mrs. Billy Hayden the "perfect" driver, said she had "noticed so many drivers who disobey laws that I wanted to do everything tight." Mrs. Hayden, a telephone operator with two children, stnd she has been driving seven years and never has had an accident. She prefers to drive slow—20 or 25 miles an hour in the city and seldom over 40 on the highway. To drive safely, said Mrs. Hayden, obey traffic laws arid "keep a clear mind." Cook some extra vegetables when you are preparing lunch or dinner. Refrigerate them and the next day mix them together and marinate them with a tangy French dressing. Serve on crisp salad greens for a delicious accompaniment to meat, fish or poultry. You'll find diced carrots, green peas, snap beans and small green lima beans are delectable served this way. Top the salad with a spoonful of mayonnaise, just before serving, if you like. LOAMS EM«IOV THE BIG 4 ONLY AT I. NATION WIDi CftlDITI Good •( over 600 iffilialtd offictt. 9.
