Page 8 fiarclon I'lly Thursday, August 8, 1963 100 Years Ago Thi* Junction f'il.y Union, load ing newspaper of what was con- sidercfl western Kansas in 18R3, viewed the future with unlimited optimism on August 8. The stale had recovered from the drought of 1800 and prospects were bright for great advances in flic prairie country. The editor wrote: "Western Kansas is arousing from the lethargy in which it has been plunged since 1800 and is taking on new life. He r farmers are full of hope; her business men wear smiling faces; speculators are on the alert; and all things speak of the bright pros- pert which Is before her. Our prairies look greener, our streams larger, our trees taller, and our rich soil turns j from the ploughshare riciie.r than j ever. | "Homesteads are taken, farms are bought, town lots are changing hands. Our cattle increase. flock s of sheep are creeping in, ] and grain ricks stand in every: field. Yes, wo are prospering; we i have .struggled through the order | of a new country, and we are j coming triumphant. Our faint hearts have left croackers have slunk into obscurity and the signers for the flesh-pots have turned their backs on us and we nre bounding ahead . . . "Thou5 8 nd» of restless, roving spirits have come among us, and the same diseontentedness which brought them hero has taken them awny, filled with bug-bear stories of drouth and inadapta- lion of our soil and climate for settlement. But enough, however, of persevering men have remained to demonstrate our capabilities and prove our resources; and today they are filled with hope. "Emigration is like * great tide that ebbs and flows period!ally. And the great current of emigration, which has been slackened for the past few years will soon commence its flow, and why will not the mighty stream set towards Kansas? No other state offers superior inducements to the settle r. We have the healthiest climate in the world —even now at this season of the year, we know not a single case of sickness in nil the extended reach of our acquaintance. Our granaries nre full to overflowing, making the subsistence of the emigrant for the first year a cheap and easy matter. Millions of acres of the finest land on the continent lie open to the Homestead claimant without price. "The groat Continental Railway which is destined to connect the. Atlantic and the Pacific will, within a twelve-month pierce these broad acres, affording an expeditious and ready outlet to the markets of the East for all our products. There is no doubt about this last fact — the work on the Union Pacific Railway is being pushed forward with vigor, and ere another harvest the snort of the iron horse will be heard at Fort Riley, and long trains of cars will be bearing out cattle and grain to the markets of the world." The editor was a bit too optimistic, fo r it was 18GG before the Union Pacific had built to Fort Riley. You don't have to wait till Christmas to play Sa-Ha Claus!
