6—Uklah Dally Journal; Uklah, Calif. ^Tuesday, Sheinwold on bridge Simple rules may be best ay, July 9, 1974 FUNNY BUSINESS By Roger Bo/ten I TRiED "TO 60 TO CAMP... I REAUtf 0ID..-.I WENT DOWN TO [THE Bus^wnoN, Btrr I JUST COULON'T 6ET ON THE BUS... This column is sometimes tall of advice' on fancy plays because bridge is sometimes a , complicated game. But there are times when you can get the best result by living a clean life and following the old copybook rules. South ruffed "the second diamond, led a dub to dummy's ace and led the queen" of spades from dummy for a finesse. The queen of spades held, and declarer next led the jack of spades from dummy to continue the finesse. East played low, and West discarded a club. The contract was now unbeatable if South followed the sage advice of the Founding Fathers: Make sure of the contract first and think about overtricks later. South should draw the last trump, cash the high clubs, ruff a club in dummy and try a heart finesse. Even if the finesse goes sour, South can lose only two hearts and one diamond. Greed Doesn't Pay The copybooks also say that greed doesn't pay; and this hand is offered to publishers of rules for clean living as proof of their claim. South decided to leave the last trump at large in order to try some heart finesses. He planned to finesse with the ten of hearts first. If 'that worked, he would lead the ace of trumps to' drop the king, cash a high club, ruff a club to reach dummy and try the other heart finesse. Alas for poor South. The heart finesse lost to the jack, and back came a club. East ruffed with the king of spades and led another heart. South had to lose a second heart trick and his ice- cold contract. Dally Question As dealer, you hold: Spades K 5 4, Hearts 5 2, Diamonds A K 9 8 76 5, Clubs 5. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid one diamond. You have only 10 points in high cards, and you would pass if these consisted chiefly of queens and jacks. Since the high cards are prime values, you can afford to open the bidding with this, borderline hand: Television highlights "Tuesday's Television Highlights By United Press International "NBC Tuesday Mystery Movie" at 8:30 p.m. has a "Faraday" episode, "Wheelbarrow Full of Trouble."
