Flower colors are the big news for spring: peony, azalea, ' blue bell, fern and turquoise. SOCIETY TKA SANDAL— These arc a wonderful travel companion—wherever the destination. This new T-slrap in fine calfskin with very pointed toe and new slim unbreakable heel is a fashion that rates plenty of favorable Rossip. Hildegarde Dresses To Suit Two Different Personalities By DOROTHY FLANDERS United Prets International ST. U)UIS (UPI) — The "incomparable Hildegarde" hauls 27 pieces of luggage on trains and planes that take her to singing engagements across the country. "I expect I've spent a half million dollars on clothes," said the star of supper clubs for more than 20 years. "They've become a trademark." Hildegarde has been called "America's most elegant chanteuse," a role she regards with pride. "1 have two personalities," she said in an interview while appearing recently in St, Louis. "My upstairs personality is the real me. The downstairs Hildegarde shocks me sometimes." At night she is a "Satin and — brocade gal," she said, but she prefers wool suits and simple dresses for everyday wear. Hildegarde made her mark in the entertainment world in the l!l30s when she startled audiences by accompanying herself at the piano while wearing long evening gloves. She became n singing star, and, on the side, revived the dying evening glove industry. She has three rules for t h c woman who, like herself, appears ageless. Her contemporaries will find the last two simple enough — providing they get past Rule No. 1. "Start to reduce when your weight goes up just two or three pounds." she said. "I can gain five pounds in a day and a halt. It takes two days of dieting to lose it." Then, she said, choose simple lines in style and emphasize a fabric with interesting weave or design. "1 carefully choose a line and fabric to show off this figure I work so hard to control," she said. For the interview, she wore a simple charcoal-grey wool dress, accented with beige satin collar and cults. A two-tone beige lint tupped her blonde hair. High style has become so much a part of Hildegarde that she recently added a fashion coordinator to her traveling staff of six. Miss Helen Rich, former fashion editor of the Miami Daily News, now advises the singer. Hildegarde explained, "Sometimes 1 make terriMe mistakes in style. And when I make a mistake I am out a thousand dollars." She changes her gown twice nightly during appearances, choosing from 25 evening dresses. Kach has its matching pair of shoes. There ore six pairs of gloves for every gown. "I get special requests for certain dresses just as I do for certain songs," she said. Fans who remember her famed interpretation of "Lili Marlene" and "Darling Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" seem to like her white satin gown with the brilliant red duster. "The men," she added with a laugh, "always prefer one of two shades — black or white." Match ironing boards to kitchen decor by covering the board with printed or pastel cotton. The covers are color-fast, won't shrink and will (it standard size boards. Coordinate Shoes With Costume In selecting any shoe, fashion decrees more coordination with every costume. Now shoes are a very important "costume accessory" and should he properly selected to harmonize with the rest of the ensemble. The hand-crafting that goes into "good" shoes today is comparable to custom workmanship. Patent leather will be worn not only with tailored fashions, but also as the perfect foil with the feminine sheer silks and chiffons being shown for late-day and evening. In colors, look for the new pale pastels in every hue. Red shoes have returned to favor. The white shoe is scheduled for an important place in the fashion picture. Milliner William J., always one to create his own fashion rules, this spring vetoes (lowers and veils for sculptured felt hats. In the daytime, he maintains, hats must cover the entire head, but for evening, the hair can show. "Let the hairdressers live," said the milliner. To prove his good faith, he dreamed up tiny hats of lace and organza which set off the coiffure ui yuii of the decoration. Thigh Control Long pantic-girdlcs — which have become more important since the advent of skinny slacks — will be even more popular this spring. Now slim skirt fashions demand control of the thigh for a smooth line. This type of foundation is especially suited to the youthful figure. For the more mature figure, the longlinc girdles and corselets are preferred — offering the needed extra firmness. Convertibles! Convertible straps will be shown on a number of new bra styles. The widely cut necklines of so many of the new fashions mean that ordinary strap placement will not serve. Convertibility will permit easy adjustment to the needs of individual dresses.
