WAF Nails It Down TYNDALL AFF3, FLA., — Amn. Kim D, Farlin of Pekin, 111., i,s living proof that today's Air Force offers almost unlimited opportunities for women. The 20-year-old brunette is the first WAF carpenter to be assigned to Tyndall. After eight weeks in technical training at Sheppard AFB, Tex., she recently arrived for duty at the carpentry shop of the 4756th Civil Fngineering Squadron. Airman Farlin was one of two girls in her chi.ss at Sheppard after volunteering for the career field. Her duties include li a n g i n g d o o r- s , installing sheet rock, hinges and hasps, and r e p ! a c i n g g 1 a s s windows. When asked why she came into the Air Force and volunteered for the carpentry field she said, "When I talked OPPORTUNITY UNLIMITED — Today's Air Force doesn't measure the carpenter by the size of his overalls, but offers women the same opportunity. This airman, Kim D. Farliin of Pekin, 111., is going to really know how to build her own home. with tlH> recruiter and others, and learned of the benefits, it .seemed like the thing I'ornu'. ' ' C a I p e n t r y i s interesting to me so I thought I would try it. I like to work with my hands. I'd r-ather be moving around and actually making something instead of just typing. I think being a carpenter is going to help me in the future. If I ever, want to maintain my facilities in my own house, I'll know how to do it. "If I had it to do all over again I would still join the Air Force. I enjoy meeting a lot of different people." The 5-foot-3-inch WAF may be required, in the course of her- duties, to carry a 50-pound tool box around. Although this does not happen every day, the 100-pound carpenter said she has no trouble doing it. Airman Farlin said, "It takes a little getting used to for a girl working with all these men. I felt sort of odd during a recent open ranks inspection. I was the only girl among 100 men."
