have lately erected a Cotton Mill of stone, with six floors, fort) feet wide and two hundred Sr eleven feet long, competent to drive more than ten thousand spindles, which is expected to commence working in November, 1 We are gratified to see, that in that part of the Union, a manufacturing spirit pervades the people. There are said to be more than fifty Cotton Mills erected 1 1 in the New-England States and the artists employed in them are in all respects equal to Europeans. Not only Spinning, but Weaving Establishments are in operation, so that we may soon expect the New-England Cotton Fabrics supplanting those of Old-England. In the present state of our affairs, it is peculiarly gratifying to learn that notwithstanding the opposition of tories and the" wiles of incendiaries, the manufactures of our country are gradually gaining ground. In Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, (a post town, containing about 70 liouses) there are 3 woollen arid 4 cotton carding machines and fifty-five spindles, which upon a moderate calculation, will average 88 dozens, or of cotton yarn per day.

Thus far, the operations arc carried on without robbing agiricul culture or commerce of one useful hand, for none but women arid children' are employed. The raw" are en-creased in value by these operations 220 per cent, and after all wages, useful repairs and common expence are paid, there will be a nett profit of from 90 to 120 per cent, on the capital employed. Notwithstanding the low price pf British goods, want of capital and every disadvantage, the business is gradually extending, and new establishments daily1 6 recting. Two establishments of no'inconsider-able fciriide arc contcrn plated in the vicinity pf Kings toruUlster county, KX One is a glass which is ts be e-rec'ed in Woodstock bjr the Ulster Manufacturing Company.
