I f Pagel2A Garden City Telegram Thursday, November 17,1977 Busters Make Liars of Coaches Garden City Community College made liars of the Jayhawk Juco Conference coaches this season. The Broncbusters, who were tabbed for third place at the coaches' annual conference in August, won seven of eight league games to tie with Independence for the title. Hutchinson, the pre-season favorite, finished 4-3-1 in league action, or in fourth place. Coffeyville's two-time defending champions dropped three of eight and finished third. Dodge City was the coaches' fourth choice, but the Conqs could manage only a split of their eight outings and finished tied for fifth. Independence was the biggest surprise, rising from a fifth-place prediction to tie for the title. The Pirates actually could be proclaimed champions by virtue of having defeated Garden City, 7-6, in their meeting. Pratt hit the nail on the head, posting a 2-5-1 mark for sixth place, just as the coaches had predicted. Fort Scott went 4-4 for a fifth-place tie and thus exceeded coaches' expectations,, which had it finishing seventh. Butler County, 2-6, and Cowley County, 0-8, assumed their predicted eighth and ninth place positions. "It doesn't matter who was predicted to win it," GCCC head coach Moe Cotter said before the season began. "They're all going to be tough. We're just going to have to go out and play the best we are capable of playing. I think we'll be a very exciting and competitive team. We'll make some mistakes, but we'll give everybody we play a good fight."
