fag« 10 Karrirn I'li.v Telegram Thursday, August 1, 1963 "~To6~~ Years Ago A nnlr on Osagp rminly and prints:! in HIP Tof>rka Statf 1 I?pr- ! ord, .Inly 22, 18fi3: , "We matlf a shfirt visit to this county last \vpok and found crops looking well. Some complaint i? madr of chinch hugs in thr corn but most of it is so larco that it is licliovpfj it will not h<> materially injtirwl. lincamr. the county scat, like a larcc number of Kansas lowns, i has seen hard limes the last two or thre-e years. It now begins to show signs of life. — some new buildincs ai> going up and a business air pervades the town. "Society in Kurlingame is far ahovr the average of Western towns. They have a genial set of county officers. Sheriff Wyntt has only filled the office since last fall but will undoubtedly be called upon by the people to serve two years longer . . . Mr. Rogers, the member of the legislature from thai county was smong those who worked last winter. If he can be prevailed '.ipon to run again, lie would undoubtedly be re-elected." The editor of the Kmporia News noted two important subjects on July 25, 1863: "Much excitement was caused in town Inst Thursday by the arrival of a 'plug hat' — the first seen in this place, since its settlement. It soon became noised abroad that the 'plug' was here, and that F. fi. Hunt, register of deeds, was its proud possessor. Curiosity was <m tip toe to gel a sight of the strange object, and the crowd, obeying a sort of natural Instinct, made a rush for Hallberg's where the receptacle for bricks was found to be undergoing a process necessary to fit it for use. "At this point the excitement became so intense that Felix was compelled to mount a beer barrel and make a speech to the assembled multitude apologizing for making this innovation upon the time-honored customs of the village and entreating the crowd to disperse, after which he hired a small boy to fire a bunch of firecreackers in honor of the new hat, and the people retired peaceably to their homes. "Thus ended one of the most exciting scenes ever known in the history of Emiwria. No causa is known for this unwarranted act of Mr. H., unless it is that he has found the position of Register a very lucrative one. At any rate, such is the general belief, and accordingly two new candidates for that office have appeared since Thursday." "Scores of hogs daily perambulate . . . (Ernporia's) streets, greatly to the disgust of every lover of cleanliness and decency. Nobody's garden or dooryard is ixompt from their visits, when they take a notion to "break through nnd steal. And this is not all. They get into the fields adjoining town nnd do much damage by destroying grain, growing crops, etc ... "Now, what is to bo clone in such cases? True, there is a hog law on the statute book, but its provisions are but little better than worthless ... A better way to get rid of these public nuisances would be for every owner of hogs, which are now running at large, to take them out of the streets, and cither keep t h e in penned or let some farmer who has plenty of corn fatten hem 'on the shares.' If those of our citizens who have hogs in t h e streets would do something of the sort, they would confer a public blessing and abate a must abominable nuisance." Hurchinson Man Guilty of Cattle Theft HUTCHINSON, Kan (AI')-Kl- lis 1). Mooney, 23, of Hutchinson, pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of grand larceny in the theft of 14 head of cattle in the nearby lown s of Arlington and Turon. Following his arraignment he was jailed in default of $2,(XX) bond pending sentencing in dis. trict court. No date for sentencing wa.s set. Mnotify allegi-lly sold the cattle for $1,800.
