1 G. AV. FL(W i Gv Probate Judge. Kesting Land. The phr- laud" is highly figurative and we have reason to believe that it i not generally understood.

Many persons think that sowing a field down in or oats or some other kind of small grain i resting it. Others think that turn-iug stock upon it and 'permitting them to graze it closely for a year or two aceoni-plisln-s the same end. A little reflection will prove to any one that neither of these processes will secure the desired end. The object designed to be attained by resting land, is to impart to it new vigor, or to restore that fertility which has been exhausted by the wind rains, droughts and a Keries of crops. A rotation of crops is bene-ticial to laud, in that it is not so draining iijMm the oil, as the same crops year after year, bt trictly sjeaking it'is not resting he noil.

Lands that neel rest are those in which the vegetable matter has been sled. Such laiids are sad. They will neither, bear a long wet sjeir nor a long draught. The richest lands, and those which remunerate most amply the cultivator, are th which are made up of decayed Vegetable watter. Such lands are capable 4f reitiur the excesses of both wet and drought.

This being the case, the sensible way to rest laud is to permit it to grow up Jwith any kind of vegetable production, and )n the fill of the year turn the vegetable tntUr uvder with a large plow. If -tin -nbeat and oats fields were not pastured, but jermittcd to grow up in grass until frost jtlien plowed deeply and let remain-dur-ing next year plowed down in the all agaijj, they -vould be itnprovel more than xmll be done by any commercial That land may improve, it must be kept rov.crcd. The soil must be shaded ffoiM the sm during the hot summer months. The pun draws the ami ions fertile proper-- tics uhjch rc in the soil to the surface and the wind blows them away. Any kind of land will soon get rich if ermitted to grow up in Weeds ami grass and these are r-roitti'd to rot on the soils on which they grew; One re.ason why cotton exhausts land so much is that it is year after year deprived of all vegetable matter except the leaves and pfalks of the cotton.

0jrn takes more from the soil perhaps than cotton; but in a rf-orn tie Id more vegetable matter is left than jn a cotton field. The lirtj way" to "rest land is to fence it up, ditch itj properly and keep all stock off it. Increase, and Intensify the Manure Heap. A prize essay of the Illinois Agricultural fociety for lTO, by R. (biddings, details Xhe cheapest and most practical plan of increasing the farm-manure pile and saving its elements from waste, and which should be adopted by every farmer! His plan is imply to save every partic le of the animal excrements, 1'njuid and solid, with all its fertilizing elements intact, free from waste I by evajKirat ion, or ire-fang.

To do this, he fills a stall or large bin, in his stable, during dry weather, with pulverized clay, roaJ sciapingsor common mU. Willi this he covers the floor of each stall three indies deep, and then places litter for animals' In-ddiug on it by this means, all tlieurin will be absorbed, and its wealth of nitrogen saved; and Mich is the absorbing i tower of dried one three-inch llooiiug will not thoroughly saturated i jn a 'long lime as to leouiie retracing. 'lie I says ills exicrimcnt rerpitreu lout one. large bin tf pulveiizcd earth to absorb the uriii often twelve cattle during the stabling season and that two men with a team tilled the hin in one day. Dried clav was also applied to the pig pen and Iicp-rost, with amonia saving results and ifapplied to the privy or faith closet, I whichis now being adopted, a great inanurial as well as auitary usull would follow.

The inducements tor the use of dry earth art: I'li'st Thai it re-pines no apparatus or ash outlay. Stcond That the liquid manure of cattle is worth more than the solid; and is usually lost, but, under this practice, all is regained. Third The dry enrlh retains within it all the value, of which usually one-third or is lot bv jernwLiitytion, leaching or "oration. fourth. It gives much larger bulk of manure, each load of which is of double1 the value of ordiuarv farm-vard manure.
