Many times parents will hesitate to enter their child in a gymnastics program for fear that the child may be pushed into a competitive situation immediately. This is not so at the Carter Gymnastic School. The students are not completely "Competition-oriented". The Carters have tried very hard to offer a well-rounded variety ol classes and objectives. They are dedicated to the sport of gymnastics, from an educators viewpoint, and to what the sport car do for the average child. Gymnastics will get the student into good physical condition, aid coordination and build confidence. Ballet, poise and a graceful lady-like appearance is stressed in the gymnastics course on girls. Classes for older teenagers concentrates on tumbling. The Carter Gymnastics students participate in a recital every spring that teaches cooperation through 'group' effort. Although no child is compelled to compete, the competition program offered at Carters Gymnastic School is an excellent one. Any child wishing to compete may enter either the 'B' team or the Conference Team. Competition is approached with vigorous enthusiasm at the Carters. The boys of the school will compete in trampoline meets this year. competition is so very liard and requires so mucli desire and work, the Carters try to concentrate on other objectives in their school, as well. They have two Titan trampolines which they use to teach back-handsprings and flips, an activity that the Friday workouts give tiie student Ifeedoin to practice and experiment on their own. Tile sport is becoming so complicated, difficult and highly organized that foi- many students it takes years to even reach a regional level. Carters Gymnastic School is in its fifth year in Panama City. Ron Carter, head coach of the school, has a Master's Degree in physical education, a minor in education and 18 years experience in gymnastics. Mrs. Carter has been a member of three significant Civic Ballet companies and has been teaching for 11 years The Carters have coached for the YMCA, Louisiana State Universitv at Baton Rouge and Iowa State University at Ames. Southeastern Gym Conference and Alabama Association. Mr. and Mrs. Carter are both rated judges with the USGF and Mrs. Carter serves on the Woman's Technical Committee, is secretary-treasurer to the Southeastern conference, and report and illustrates for Gymnast magazine. Their gym has 6,000 sq. ft. of working area, with complete Olympic specified gymastics equipment and a dance studio.
