IBB each It Sims To Me By I'AULSIMS Sports K'dltor Ron Cross, former News sports edilor, of Burns Flat. Okla writes: "Mr.

Sims, I read with great interest and some emotion the "It Sims To Me," column of Friday, Nov. 30, especially the quotes attributed to Swede IAJC. I was sports editor of the Daily News before Swede came there and during his first two years. Where he said that he had to fight for every improvement he made and anybody at Pampa during the time he speaks of. knows what he is talking about is certainly true A group of Pampa businessmen, headed by Ben Sturgeon, decided they had had enough of losing and formed a club, or committee, to find out why Pampa couldn't compete with other schools in football.

They made several changes and recommendations, some of which were acted upon and others that still haven't been and won't be as long as Pampa remains a "basketball town." But the first thing Pampa did is hire a first class coach, which Swede Lee is, and his coaching record proves. He is the type of coach that gets the most out of his players, hires first class assistants and docs things his way, even though he has to fight for his "way" all the time. This is what Pampa needs now, plus a good, strong athletic director, if they hope to compete in all sports. I am very sorry to sec that Pampa has gone back to being just a "basketball town" again. With Ben Sturgeon on the school board maybe this situation will be worked.

There are several influential people in Pampa, even in your news media, who are simply nothing but basketball supporters. After having covered Pampa sports for over 10years I still have a special place in my heart for the athletic program there and it would be nice to see it go back to an all around good athletic program. Sincerely, Ron Cross" More urban households engage in football mostly as spectators than swimming, walking and bicycling. A basketball oddity of 1973, mentioned in Converse's 1973 Basketball Yearbook: "13 was a lucky number for Wayland Baptist Plainvicw) in its 67-48 win over E. New Mexico.

The win broke a 13-game losing streak, and Wayland's record became 13-13. 13 players suited up for the winners, and they made 13 free throws on February 13. Also, the loser's leading scorer netted 13 points." Another unusual basketball happening related in the Yearbook San Bernadino Valley College was at home against San Diego City College, and the hosts were leading in the game, 1 14-85. The hosts "mercifully" inserted 18 year old blonde Sue Palmer with 3:12 left to play. The visitors immediately walked off the court.

Roosevelt Heads UPI All-SWC Team DALLAS (UPI i Roosevelt Ix'aks and Dickey Morton, who combined to rewrite the Southwest Conference rushing records this season, highlighted the United Press International all- conference team, a unit that was dominated by the league's two bowl teams Texas and Texas Tech Morton, the Arkansas senior who made the all-conference team for the third straight year, became the SWC's leading career rusher this year with a 1.298-yard performance that boosted him to a three-year total of 3.317.

That surpassed the five-year-old record of Chris Gilbert, who amassed 3.231 yards in his career al Texas. Leaks, with another year to go as the key to the Texas running attack, accumulated 1.415 yards this year from his fullback position, the most yards ever gained in one year by a Southwest Conference runner. Broke Old Record Not only did he break the 23- year record of Texas Bob he came within eight yards of the all-time NCAA single game rushing mark when he carried for 342 yards against SMU. Those two unanimous choices to the 1973 team were joined in the backfield by quarterback Joe Barnes, the senior who guided Texas Tech to its best record (10-11 since entering the Southwest Conference; and junior running back Mike Luttrell of Texas Christian, who overcame an early season injury to still finish among the leading rushers in the conference. The team is selected in balloting by sportswriters and spors broadcasters.

Overwhelming Choice was the overwhelming choice as offensive player of the year in the conference while sophomore linebacker Ed Simonini of Texas was the narrow choice over Texas Tech lineman Ecomet Burley as defensive player of the year. David Walker, who took over the quarterbacking duties midway through the season for Texas was chosen freshman player of the year. Other than Lultrell and Morton, the only player to dent the Texas-Texas Tech monopoly of the first offensive team was Baylor's Charles Dancer, far and away the leading receiver in the conference. The Longhorns, who will meet Jan. 1 in the Cotton 'Bowl, placed center Bill Wyman, guard Don Crosslin and tackle Bob Simmons on the team along with Leaks.

Four Tech Players Texas Tech was represented by guard Dennis Allen, tackle Tom Ferguson, tight end Andre Tillman and kicker Don Grimes as well as Barnes. Dancer and Wyman were unanimous picks along with Leaks and Morton. I On defense the front four was anchored by Burley and included Texas' Doug English, Arkansas' Jon Rhiddlehoover and TCU's Charlie Davis, a repeater from 1972. Joining Simonini in the linebacking corps were Danny Rhodes of Arkansas and Dede Terveen of TCU while the defensive backfield was made up of Jay Arnold of Texas, Bruce Henley of Rice, and Texas Tech's Kenneth Wallace and Danny Willis.
