ESPANOLA Santa Fe to host state tournament for Silver Gloves ELECT GAUL F0LEKJ1R STATE TREASURED 1 Two of the 32 teams in the EVCA Slow Pitch Softball Leagues entered A and Division play last Friday evening with prefection marks. After five games, Joes Service of the Mens A League is the only male team (5-0) while Harkins Oil. Valencia had three for Pojoaque a did second baseman Cippy Gomez. Tony Salazar of Rpss Salazar threw one of those unusual shutouts in slow pitch by blanking Don Carlos of Taos, 15-0, in a six-inning game.

He scattered six hits. Joel Gonzales had three hits and Walter Salazar went four-for-four 0at the plate. Wilfred Salazar of Harkins had the other blanking as he stopped Western States Telephone, 9-0, on five hits May 10th. Harkins womens team had a struggle with Pueblo Electric as two teams were tied at 1-1 going into the 6th inning. The unbeaten Gas team camp up with four runs to win, 5-1.

Robin Carlson capped the rally with a three-run homer to ice the game. Harkins then routed the first-year San Juan Nightingales, 27-1, with Roberta Struck hurling a two-hitter in five frames. The Gals from the hill continue to roll over all opposition with two easy wins this past week. They roared past Pueblo Drugs, 20-9, Thursday as Mariann Frankhouse had four hits including a homer. Gurule explained he has been contacting area merchants and asking for their support a $7.50 donation to defray expenses for gymnasium rental and trophies. Arrangements have been made with the Santa Fe Boys Club to house visiting boxers at no charge.

The Club may also open its kitchen and prepare meals at a nominal charge. The Silver Gloves, where several Golden Gloves champs got dieir starts, is for boys from eight to 15 years of age. The Santa Fe tournament will offer 10 weight classes in four age groups starting with eight and nine-year-olds from 50 to 95 pounds. Among the local boxers to compete in the state Silver Gloves tourney is Chris Linson, a student at Harrington Junior High here, and currently the Rocky Mountain regional Junior Olympic champion. Young Linson worked his way through state competition and then, two weeks ago, trimmed the field in the regionals in Pocatello, Idaho.

He is now training for the National Junior Olympics in Illinois which starts next month. Like Linson, many local ring champs emerge from the very depths of obscurity and plunge suddenly into the limelight. Until six weeks ago, very few Santa Feans knew Chris Linson had the potential to become a national champion. It was probably unintentional, but Gurule effectively kept the young boxer under wraps before unveiling him in the state Junior Olympics in Albuquerque in late April. Linson was selected as the top boxer of the tournament held in the Police Athletic League gymnasium.

Another example of a meteoric rise into local, state and national ring prominence is Danny Sugar Ray Theragood. Pencil-thin and whippet-fast, Theragood, now 20, has won nearly every major amateur title available except an Olympic medal. He is presently in training and is to begin prepping for the 76 Games sometime this summer. other four times. In the womens the East and West Divisions will play each other five times and have one inter-division game so each team will have eight single games in addition to six doubleheaders.

This gives all of the 32 teams a 25-game schedule for the season. Joes Service kept its perfect mark with wins Wednesday and Thursday evenings over the Fads (18-14) and the Cavaliers (9-5), respectively. Joes will carry the best overall mark into the A Division and four teams will have 4-1 marks. Lloyds Conoco will have a 2-3 mark in the A Division. All six of the A Division teams will take part in the A League play-offs at the end of the season.

P.J.s House of Shoes earned a spot in the A League with a come-from-behind 16-14 win over the Cavaliers late Thursday evening scoring eight times in the bottom of the 6th. Aaron Hedrick, the playing manager, circled the bases for an inside the park homer as did third baseman Robert Seeds. Harkins Oil ended the four-game winning streak of Chriss Place in Pojoaque again coming from behind to win, 9-5, with a three-run rally in the 5th John Here are the final standings of round robin play with the teams placed in the leagues and divisions they will be playing in the rest of the year. Theragood is a former Silver Gloves and Junior Olympic champ on the national level and burst upon the scene two years ago when he danced and jabbed his way to an American Golden Gloves crown in Minneapolis.

The day after he captured the crown, The Mexican carried the story of Theragoods successes. When he returned home, Santa Fe welcomed the champ with a special parade and a key to the city. Of course, all of these boxers receive the usual congratulatory commentary from their peers and their parents and those who know them.

But, to the majority of Santa Feans, they remain for the most part anonymous. Possibly, this is the fault of the media for without it few are aware of what boxing action is taking place and where. Discounting culpability, it appears to be about time Santa Fe rallied behind organized boxing starting with the Silver Gloves Tournament early next month. Many anta Fe businessmen already have. There are some excellent young boxers coming up, says Gurule.

They will be needing support, mostly encouragement. Although outside financial backing has not been heavily solicited to date, a boxing program has been growing and flourishing in this city and will undoubtedly continue to do so. The three are Weston Press of Santa Fe St. Michaels and James Padilla and Andrew Martinez of Pojoaque.

Press adds this honor to his long list of accomplishments as a scholar-athlete at the Santa Fe school. He received the coveted Coronado Kiwanis Dick Shelley Award recently as the top senior basketballer and Saturday afternoon established a school record in the two-mile run while competing in the state track meet in Hobbs. He is also expected to receive some top honors at the schools annual athletic awards banquet tonight. In addition to his prowess on court and field, Press is a sound student in the classroom with a perfect 4.0 grade point average for four years of high school. James Padilla is a three-sport letterman at Pojoaque High in baseball, basketball and track.

Martinez is a top flight participant in basketball and baseball.
